On Monday, the WTA published the first ranking of the best tennis players in the 2022 season, taking into account the points scored in the tournaments in Adelaide and Melbourne. Iga Świątek reached the semi-finals in Adelaide, in which she had to acknowledge the superiority Ashleigh Barty. Although the Polish woman did not defend the title she won a year ago, in in the WTA ranking, she moved up from ninth to eighth place.
The day after dropping out of the tournament, Światek informed that due to a minor injury, she would not take part in the starting games in Sydney. He will calmly focus on preparations for the Grand Slam Australian Open. The WTA also released the ranking by which the players qualify for the season-ending WTA Finals.
In this ranking, the best Polish tennis player has accumulated 185 points so far and is currently ranked sixth. However, this did not prevent the WTA from “qualifying” the Polish woman to the group of WTA Finals participants. The letter “q” appeared next to her name, which means that our competitor can be sure of participation in the prestigious competition at the end of the season.
Świątek commented on the organization’s mishap via Twitter. The bug itself has already been removed from the official website.
“I know I had a solid week in Adelaide, but such an award? Thanks!” – Swiatek wrote.
The Australian Open will start on January 17 at the Melbourne courts. This is the first Grand Slam tournament of the season. Last year, in Australia, Poland managed to reach the fourth round of the tournament.
