A huge accident happened on Sunday evening, during the six-day track race in Ghent. Mark Cavendish did not manage to get past another cyclist who slipped on a wet stain.

– Already on the previous lap I saw that there is some water on the track. I drove at a lower speed, but something went wrong on the next lap – reports Jasper De Buyst, one of the participants of the race, quoted by the Daily Star.

Mark Cavendish left the track on a stretcher. He waved at the audience before being transported to the hospital. The former world champion went to the ICU. He spent the night there.

– He has a large bruise on his ribs. He also feels a lot of pain in his thigh and shoulder – described hotly Iljo Keisse, Cavendish’s teammate.

“Thank you for all the news. Mark will spend the night in the hospital after the accident,” wrote the cyclist’s wife, Peta, on social media.

“Thank you to all the medical staff who helped us. Thank you also to the Deceuninck-Quick-Step team who took care of me and the children in no time,” she added.

The competition was interrupted for over 30 minutes. Then the race was completed.
