Madeline MacKenzie, Alexy Levy, Jacqueline Carlyle, Joanna Chyłka, and recently Maria Klielicz. The series is taken over by strong female characters that make it impossible to tear yourself away from the screen.
We used to have Xena, the warrior princess, the hit Ally McBeal, and Buffy, the Vampire Slayer. Today, strong and independent girls are the main protagonists of an increasing number of serials. On the screen, they strive to make their dreams come true, are great at their work, are not afraid of taking challenges and difficult decisions, and at the same time take care of each other. After many years, when serials about strong women were exceptions that had to be looked closely for, the time has come for a flood of characteristic female characters that appear in fantasy series, crime fiction, as well as comedies and drama. If you are looking for good series of recent years, with the theme of girl power, you will surely like these proposals.
“Big Little Lies” (HBO GO)
Produced by Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, this series is about women for women and is mostly directed by women.
“Big Lies” is a story about five completely different mothers of first graders going to school together, connected by the story of a murder. The main characters are the somewhat overbearing Madeline (Reese Witherspoon), the temporarily retired lawyer Celeste (Nicole Kidman), the yogi Bonnie (Zoe Kravitz), businesswomen Renata (Laura Dern) and the new in town, much poorer than the rest of Jane (Shailene Woodley). Although at first glance, women have little in common, and there are even some animosities between them, as a result of certain events they decide to help each other. The first season of the series, filmed on the basis of the book of the same name by Liane Moriarty, mixes the criminal and moral plot, the second – added due to the great popularity of the series – is a story about everyday life and women’s secrets with a great guest appearance by Meryl Streep as somewhat scary and determined mother-in-law Celeste. The series turned out to be a huge phenomenon and recalled the great demand for complex female stories with strong main characters.
A new TVN series with a true story in the background. The “recipe” takes place in two time frames – now and in 1936. It all starts with Zosia (Zofia Wichłacz), a gifted architecture student who discovers the diary of her great-grandmother, Maria Kielicz (Agnieszka Więdłocha), written in 1936 in the attic of her family home. However, this is not just any diary, because Maria was a special woman for her time. She raised her daughter alone and was a well-educated architect who, after arriving in Warsaw, defeated a group of men and, thanks to her project, obtained the position of Jan Wedel’s assistant. In the series, together with Zosia, we get to know Maria’s story, and at the same time the history of the oldest Polish chocolate brand, E. Wedel, which celebrates its 170th anniversary this year. Real Wedel milestones are woven into fictional events, such as the inventing of the name Ptasie Mleczko®, which was launched on the market in 1936. And what else will Zosia find in her great-grandmother’s diary? It seems that the title “Recipe” is still very valuable, because the journal from years ago brings the girl a lot of trouble. The premiere of the first episode on September 5 at 21:30 on TVN.
“The Morning Show” (Apple TV +)
Reese Witherspoon returns as the producer and lead actor, this time joining forces with Jennifer Aniston. “The Morning Show” is a behind-the-scenes series of breakfast television set in the Me Too era. The well-known and well-liked host Mitch Kessler (Steve Carrell) is fired from his job after accusations of sexual harassment. Everyone wants to know what exactly happened and whether Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston), who co-hosted the show for years, knew what was going on. While searching for a new host, news chief Cory Ellison (Billy Curdup) finds local journalist Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon), who has just made a fool of herself on air on her station. Bradley, visiting one of the segments, suddenly becomes the co-host of the show, which is to help cover the scandal. The problem is, the girl is not as stupid as everyone seems to be. Although the new and old handlers do not like each other at first, they decide to join forces to tell the truth. “The Morning Show” is a great, suspenseful series that shows the functioning of the media and television from the backstage, and at the same time tells about the scale of abuse taking place in this industry. The premiere of the season 2 is scheduled for September 17, which will take place in the times of fighting the coronavirus.
“Super Girls” (Netflix)
A comedy-drama series inspired by the biography of his co-producer, former editor-in-chief of the American edition of the “Cosmopolitan” magazine. The main characters are three girls – Jane Sloan (Katie Stevens), Kat Edison (Aisha Dee), Sutton Brady (Meghann Fahy), who start their career in the fictional magazine “Scarlet”. Over the course of four seasons (we are waiting for the premiere of the fifth and recently on the Polish Netflix) we observe how girls climb the next career ladder, experience love contests and private tragedies. And everything is being watched by their boss and authority Jacqueline Carlyle (Melora Hardin), who sometimes leads them to make the right decision or, on the contrary, allows them to burn themselves, and sometimes makes terrible mistakes herself. Although “Girls over the word” is a drama series that could be advertised to fans of “Gossip Girl” or “Sex and the City”, its creators are not afraid to take up important topics, such as breast cancer prevention, searching for one’s own identity, rape or influence childhood trauma to decision making in adulthood.
A criminal series about the adventures of the uncompromising patron Joanna Chyłka (Magdalena Cielecka), the heroine of the book series by Remigiusz Mróz. Chyłka has all the features that until now were reserved for male heroes – she drinks too much, partying, swearing, has a complicated biography, but she is also brilliant at her job, although she sometimes makes mistakes. Each season, the main character faces a different hopeless case, and she feels the breath of the psychopathic Piotr Langer (Jakub Gierszał) on her back, who plays a strange game of cat and mouse with her. However, Chyłka is one of those heroines who, even if she falls very low, still manages to lift her. In November, Player.pl will be able to see the fifth and final installment of the series – “Chyłka. Accusation”.
“Wielkie kłamstewka”, “The Morning Show”, “Girls over the word”, series about Chyłka or “Receptura” are just a few examples of series from recent years, which are more and more often not only populated by strong female heroines, but simply spinning around them. And this is just the beginning, because their popularity proves that after many years of male domination on the screen, we want to watch interesting, complex and suspenseful stories whose protagonists and authors are women.
