Disney+ has unveiled the trailer for its next horror and alien invasion film, Stalked.
After having tried many genres as a screenwriter (the western with Jane Got a Gunthe slasher comedy with underwateror comedy adventure with Love and Monster), Brian Duffield took on the role of director for the first time in 2020, with the black comedy Explosive adolescence. What could be more logical than‘A good horror film for its second realization?
Indeed, it is repeating the experience this year with Stalkeda horror film slated for release on Hulu in the United States and on Disney+ in France. The trailer is out this Wednesdaygiving us a glimpse of Duffield’s horrific staging.
under your bed, no one will hear you scream
As a reminder, the film tells the story of Brynn Adams, a young woman rejected by her community and played by Kaitlyn Dever. One night, his house is invaded by alien creatures. The film mixes several genres, combining horror with science fiction. Despite this rather pleasant proposal, the pitch is a priori rather classic: a character left to himself, creatures whose design is somewhat reminiscent of the critters of Stranger Things (from what we can see), the inability to escape or contact anyone…
Putting forward more of the science fiction aspect might have allowed the trailer to stand out better. Note, however, the catchphrase: “Every year there are over 1,650,000 home invasions. This one is different”which cleverly plays on the double notion of invasion.
Usually, monsters hide under the beds… This time it’s different
The teaser puts much more emphasis on the horror aspect, revealing very little of the appearance of the monsters and leaving nothing to guess at their extra-terrestrial origin. The trailer thus prefers to play on the fear of the unknown and the invisible. This technique of hiding the source of our anxiety has often proved its worth, as in the first Alien for example, probably the best decision to raise the pressure crescendo. The staging still looks rather effective, thanks to this bias.
So even if the pitch doesn’t seem to be reinventing the wheel, Brian Duffield’s production can promise a little gripping horror entertainment. To judge, you will have to wait until September 22, 2023date of its release on Disney+.
