Father of Taraji P. Henson’s son was killed in 2003
Taraji P. Henson spoke about one of the most difficult moments of her life: when she had to tell her son, Marcell, that his father had been murdered.
The 50-year-old actress, who is famous for the series ‘Empire’ and the films ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’ and ‘Stars Beyond Time’ talks about this situation in ‘Peace Of Mind’. In a preview of the show’s new episode, she tells co-host Tracie Jade Jenkins and therapist Sierra Hillsman that she was unable to tell Marcell the truth when his father was killed.
“My son’s father was suddenly taken and murdered when [Marcell] was nine, and I didn’t know how to tell him that,” Henson confessed. “I couldn’t say that he was murdered, so I said that he died in an accident.”
The actress said Marcell ended up discovering the truth about her father’s death after a few years. “He came up to me and said, ‘Why didn’t you tell me that my father was murdered?’ And then we had to do therapy “, she explained.
Then, the artist asked Hillsman what a father could say to a son in this type of situation. The therapist advised, “I would definitely recommend using age-appropriate language and explaining that there are times when people do bad things to other people.”
“I didn’t have the courage for that. I didn’t. I couldn’t; [those words] didn’t come out of me. I hid it. I read the … It was in the document,” Henson replied, before starting to cry. “He was stabbed. It was the worst way to die … I just had no words for it. I didn’t know how to say this to a nine-year-old boy.”
According to the Independent website, Taraji P. Henson had Marcell with William LaMarr Johnson in 1994. The couple ended up dating, and Johnson was killed in 2003.
