Netter Films, PalmStar Media and Westbrook Studios (co-owned by Will and Jada Smith) will inaugurate the set of “Alchemist” this summer, based on the best-selling book by Paulo Coelho. In 2016, PalmStar purchased from the Weinstein brothers for $ 6.5 million. rights to screening title. Deadline announces that the first slap will fall in September.
“Alchemist”. Shooting of the bestseller Paulo Coelho starts in September
Sebastian de Souza will play the role of the shepherd of Santiago, who goes to Egypt in search of the treasure. He will be accompanied on screen by: Tom Hollander, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Jordi Molla, Youssef Kerkour and Ashraf Barhom. As Deadline points out, the cast and crew of the film reflect the authenticity of the action taking place in Spain and North Africa, as well as diversity worthy of a global production.
As for the screening attempts so far, “Alchemik” has not been lucky. The first plans were made six years after the premiere of Coelho’s book, in 1994, when the rights to the film went to Warner Bros. – after that, it got quiet around the project for the next few years. It wasn’t until 2003 that the news broke that “The Alchemist” would be directed by Laurence Fishburne, but nothing came of it. Not much later, in 2007, Fishburne, together with the A-Mark Entertainment studio, made another attempt to shoot “Alchemist” – also this time the production failed to complete.
When PalmStar Media paid the Weinstein brothers $ 6.5 million in 2016. Fishburne was still on the creative board for making the film possible. Santiago was due to play Idris Elba. Now, however, Fishburne’s name is missing from the group of producers, although still in 2018 in an interview with Hollywood Reporter, the actor assured that the work on “Alchemist” is in progress. Fishburne was replaced by Will Smith, who will supervise the production on behalf of Westbrook Studios. The film is directed by PalmStar boss Kevin Frakes (“John Wick”, “Hidden Beauty”). Claudio Miranda will be responsible for the photos.
