9.6 liters of pure alcohol – this is how much the average Pole drank in 2020. This is definitely less than in 2019, reports Rzeczpospolita.
In 2019, a statistical resident of Poland consumed as much as 9.78 liters of pure alcohol – according to the statistics of the State Agency for Solving Alcohol Problems. It was also the largest number in over 100 years since these types of statistics have been conducted.
For several years, the consumption of alcohol in Poland has been growing, but the pandemic of 2020 interrupted this trend. Experts have no doubt that the reason for this was further lockdowns and the closing of bars, pubs and restaurants. According to the former head of PARP, Krzysztof Brzózka, last year Poles drank definitely less beer.
The little ones drink less. And the others?
– Young people drink beer mainly in company, at parties and in pubs. Meanwhile, in 2020, the catering industry faced two lockdowns – says Brzózka in an interview with Rzeczpospolita.
Some experts, however, point out that in the remaining groups, alcohol consumption may even have increased in 2020.
– We have conducted international comparative studies, which show that (in 2020) 10 percent. most drinkers clearly increased their consumption. This can lead to many problems. We have data which show that the number of deaths directly related to alcohol has increased, commented Dr. Jacek Moskalewicz from the Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology in Warsaw for Rzeczpospolita.
