Alison dos Santos wins the 400 m hurdles at Drake Relays in the United States

Alison dos Santos, bronze medalist at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, returned this Saturday (30/4) to the 400 m hurdles and came back well. She won the gold medal at the 112th edition of the Drake Relays, held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa, United States.

He completed the distance in 48.41, taking the lead in the Brazilian and South American Rankings of the race, in addition to the second place in the 2022 World Ranking, behind only the North American Khallifah Rosser, who has 48.20, since April 22. It was the best debut in the career of the athlete from São Paulo.

In this Saturday’s race, the American David Kendziera was in second place, with 49.43, followed by Rosser, the third, with 49.49.

The task, however, was not an easy one. “Lots of rain, wind and cold 9 degrees, a shame for such a traditional competition in Iowa”, commented the coach Felipe de Siqueira. “We ran to win the race, because a lot of people paid for tickets and came to watch Alison’s race”, he added.

Piu, as he is known in athletics, will now compete again at the Diamond League stages in Doha, Qatar, on May 13, and Eugene, in the United States, on May 28.

Alison debuted in the 2022 season on April 16, with second place in the 400 m at the USATF Golden Games, which were part of the 62nd Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California. He obtained the mark of 44.54, second best result in Brazil and third in South America in history.

Alison and coach Felipe de Siqueira have been at the United States Olympic Center since March 3, in Chula Vista, in the San Diego region, California. The immediate objective is the preparation for the Oregon World Cup, from July 15th to 24th, also in the United States, but in the long term, of course, is the Paris-2024 Olympics.

The last event of the 21-year-old from São Joaquim da Barra, in the 400 m hurdles, was the Galà dei Castelli, stage of the silver series of the World Athletics Continental Tour, held on September 14, 2021, at Stadio Comunale, in the city of Bellinzona, Switzerland.
