American Murderer opens the competition of the Taormina Film Festival. The Matthew Gentile-directed film is the true story of Jason Derek Brown, a charismatic con man played by Tom Pelphery, who funds a luxurious lifestyle through a series of scams. One day he comes up with a very ambitious plan by becoming the most unlikely and elusive member of the FBI’s top ten most wanted.
“Before wanting to be a director I wanted to become an FBI agent – says Matthew Gentile-. I often went to see which were the hardest criminals and I was drawn to the face of this man with a crew cut named Jason. A face that appeared on my computer screen even twelve years later, I had finished studying at the film school and he was still a fugitive, he had not yet been captured and I was struck by his ability to manipulate and make himself liked “. The film is a thriller that examines the dark side of the American dream.
“I tried to explore this type of character and the fascination evil exerts on the viewer. It wasn’t supposed to be a film about a serial killer, but an attempt to show a multiple, 360-degree point of view on this person ”. In American Murderer music is of great importance. “I started with natural sounds, like the wind, the key was the dark one and then from there I developed the soundtrack”, says Scott Gentile (brother of the director) who handled the music for the film.
Also starring is Ryan Phillippe, as Special Agent Lance Leising, who pursues Jason across the American Southwest and finds himself drawn into a web of violence, deception and betrayal; Jacki Weaver (Oscar nominee for Bright sidealongside Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro), Tony Award winner Idina Menzel, Shantel VanSanten, Paul Schneider, Moises Arias and Kevin Corrigan.
A true crime story that for the director is above all a film about family and an examination of the dark side of the American dream.
