An evening walk around Krakow with background music

Every day I watch Krakow through the car window. Everyday noise and hustle and bustle, crowds of tourists, traffic jams blocking the passage, smog making it impossible to breathe – these are the first associations with my city. However, there are places that help me calm down and find my balance. Night walks, flickering lantern lights and music in my headphones allow me to relax after a day full of noise. I would like to share my favorite spaces with you, so I went for a walk with my friend Martyna – you will see her photos in this article.

I especially appreciated the possibility of going outside in a pandemic. Like most of the public, I was locked at home for a long time. Work, everyday life closed in a small space – all this was extremely tiring in the long run. The long-awaited rest was brought by walks, which I did not like before. Now I leave the house accompanied by my favorite music, and being free from cables, even those in headphones, gives me the freedom I am looking for at the time.

Until now, I have used over-ear headphones with a cable. Now I have received the Huawei FreeBuds 4i and FreeBuds Pro headphones for testing and they will accompany me on today’s walk. I started connecting them to my smartphone – I put the case in front of me and quickly paired it thanks to the Bluetooth function. To do this, just open the case and hold the button on the side for two seconds. My phone found the device without any problems. Ready. I can start listening to music.

I start my walk at the Bernatka footbridge, a pedestrian and bicycle bridge connecting Kazimierz with Podgórze, one of the most interesting investments of recent decades, thanks to which I managed to revive the beautiful, but slightly forgotten Old Foothills. There are a lot of recommendable restaurants in its vicinity: Thai, Basque, French cuisine, on the other side – Georgian, cafes and ice cream parlors. No wonder a lot of people hang out here. The footbridge itself is made more attractive by the figures of acrobats who unsteady on ropes in the space between the pedestrian and bicycle crossing. It seems that heavy characters are about to fall into the Vistula with a loud splash. A viewing balloon rises in the background and the sun begins to set. I go downstairs and sit on the river bank.

I fire up the music app, and Cardi B enters this romantic scenery. Before I listen to the rhythmic rap, however, I notice that Martyna says something to me. I take one earpiece out of my ear – the music automatically stops. When I put it back on, it starts to play again. Gently silences it for an incoming notification for a while. Two taps on the handset are enough to stop or restart the music. So I turn on Cardi B again and drag it across the handset to make it up to the max. The rapper’s music isolates me from the world, but that’s not difficult here – there are no crowds on the boulevards today. So we decide to move to bustling Kazimierz.

Krakow’s Kazimierz enjoys unflagging interest from tourists. Today, despite the fact that it is still summer and one of the last hot days of the year is favorable for walks, we take photos without major obstacles. The only exception is the closed intersection of Boga Ciała and Meiselsa streets. A small crowd gathers there. As the lady from security explains – you have to wait two minutes, because they are shooting a romantic comedy here. Some look with curiosity, others indignantly complain that they will be late for the tram. But in fact, after two minutes, you can go. We didn’t see the scene in action, it’s probably happening inside one of the historic tenement houses.

While we are walking around Kazimierz, my phone rings. Excellently! The perfect opportunity to test your calls via FreeBuds Pro. I pick up the call with two taps. I can hear the interlocutor perfectly well, he does not pay attention to the quality of our call, as is the case, for example, during hands-free calls. The headphones worked perfectly well. I finish the connection with two taps.

Huawei FreeBuds Pro do not have silicone rubber bands. So how do they stay in the ears? The headphones use the shape of the ear to adjust the active noise reduction. This is how the manufacturer explains it from the technical point of view. How does it work in practice? When I turn on “A new error” Moderat, I am immediately struck by the purity of the electronic sound, the unpleasant roughness that comes out of my laptop’s speakers disappear. But what draws my attention the most is the amazing bass that the headphones push to the limit – it sounds really great.

We decide to look for conditions that will be a real challenge for the headphones. Martyna proposes the Forum – one of the most crowded party spots in this city. In addition, there is now an amusement park and a viewing balloon under the former hotel on the Vistula River. There will be crowds there for sure. So again we move to the other side of the Vistula, this time using the Grunwaldzki Bridge. Even though it is Thursday evening, the Forum is really bustling.

Loud music, groups of friends indulge in animated conversations over beer, parks hang around on the carousel, taking colorful selfies on Instagram. I decide to contrast the dynamic surroundings with subtle music. I wonder for a moment what playlist will suit this scenery. Ultimately I decide not to give forums to my FreeBuds – I choose the soft and soft sounds of Sufjan Stevens’ music.

I keep my finger on the right earpiece. After a while, I hear a woman’s voice say, “Noise cancellation”. Suddenly it becomes noticeably quieter. The noise of conversations and the music from the club are strongly muffled, I can hear them a bit, but somewhere in the distance, as if everything was covered with a giant pillow. Now I am accompanied only by music from the headphones. At this point, I notice that despite wearing them for many hours, I do not feel that they weigh me down in any way, cause discomfort or fatigue. Still, as in the beginning – I can barely feel them.

My favorite music accompanying me on the way allowed me to look at the city from a different perspective. The sunset on the Vistula River observed in the rhythm of rap, colorful Kazimierz and the lively space under the Forum contrasted with calm music – all this freed me from the stress accumulated throughout the day. The walk not only gave me the expected silence, but also the feeling of freedom that I missed so much.
