The shortages of microprocessors make it impossible for car manufacturers to recover from the collapse of 2020, according to the analysis of the Polish Economic Institute. According to experts, economic data from Japan may signal an improvement in the industry’s situation – not only in the Land of the Rising Sun, but also in the world.

PIE noted that the automotive industry has been struggling with a shortage of semiconductors for over a year. The economic recovery in the second half of 2020, following the loosening of previous restrictions introduced in the fight against the pandemic, caused a sharp increase in demand for consumer durables, including electronic equipment, it was recalled. “The automotive industry has suffered as a result, as microprocessor manufacturers have focused on deliveries primarily to those producing smartphones, tablets and gaming devices” – added in Friday’s analysis.

Experts noted that in November 2021, Japanese industrial production increased by 7.2%. compared to October, which was the best result since 2013. “The improvement was largely due to a 43.1% m / m increase in the production of cars and other motor vehicles,” it was noted.

As recalled, it was preceded by a three-month decline in production, which was the result of a shortage of microprocessors. These problems were exacerbated by the production limitations of parts and components suppliers in Southeast Asia due to increased infections with the Delta variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. In the opinion of analysts, the November result is “unexpectedly good and may be a signal of an improvement in the situation of the automotive industry in Japan and, consequently, also worldwide”. It has not been ruled out that it will be inhibited due to the emergence of a new variant of the coronavirus.

“The microprocessor shortage is effectively preventing car makers from recovering from the 2020 crash.” – emphasized in the latest issue of “Tygodnik Gospodarczy PIE”. It was noted that from January to October 2021, 5.37 million passenger cars were produced in Japan – nearly 23.5 percent. less than in the corresponding period of 2019. In turn, in Germany, which is the largest car producer in Europe, in August 2021 the monthly production of passenger cars fell below 150 thousand for the first time since April 2020. units, up to 135 thousand. During the 10 months of 2021, 2.55 million cars were produced, i.e. as much as 36%. less than the same period of 2019 – added.

As noted, the effects of the global crisis in the automotive industry are also felt on the Polish market. In the period January-October 2021, 223 thousand units were produced. passenger cars, i.e. by 40 percent less compared to the same period of 2019. “The decrease in the availability of new cars also affects the market of used vehicles” – it was noted. According to one of the portals dealing with intermediation in their sale, quoted by PIE, this year nearly 2.12 million passenger cars were available on the Polish market. “This is the lowest number since 2018. At that time, the median price of used cars increased by PLN 6,000, from PLN 16,500 in 2018 to PLN 22,500 in November 2021” – it was calculated.

According to PIE, overcoming the problem of shortages of microprocessors would be beneficial for the Polish economy, because the automotive industry is an important part of it. It was reminded that in the period from January to October 2021, motor vehicles accounted for 3.6% of the total number of cars. Polish export value. Poland specializes in in the production and export of vans and buses. “However, it was the producers of parts and components for foreign customers, mainly Germany, that generated 8.6 percent of revenues from Polish exports of goods” – it was noted. In the opinion of analysts, “the increase in the production of passenger cars in Germany in November 2021 to 308 thousand in November 2021 may give hope”. (PAP)
