Angelina Jolie sells a painting by Winston Churchill

The painting “Tower of the Booksellers Mosque” depicting the 12th-century building at sunset with the Atlas Mountains in the background was Churchill’s gift to US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. It is the only painting completed by the British Prime Minister during World War II. Churchill painted it after the Casablanca Conference in January 1943.

After the conference, the auction house said, both leaders visited Marrakesh, and Churchill presented the painting to Roosevelt as a memento of the trip.

The landscape was sold by the president’s son after his death and changed hands several times. Jolie and her then partner Brad Pitt bought him in 2011.

It is estimated that the work will cost between 1.5 and 2.5 million pounds. The auction house hopes it can set a new record – the most expensive painting by Churchill to date has sold for £ 1.8m. The painting “The Goldfish Pond at Chartwell” (1932) was sold in 2014 at Sotheby’s. It came from the collection of Mary Soames – Churchill’s youngest daughter.

Jolie is not known as an art collector, which cannot be said about her ex-husband, Brad Pitt. The actor is her passionate enthusiast. On the basis of the divorce settlement, Angelina Jolie came into possession of the works of, inter alia, Banksy and Neo Rauch.
