You may not know the artist’s music or even like the game, but still have a great time at a Fortnite concert. I don’t know how much it helps to promote the game or the contractor, but the event was great.
In April last year, Travis Scott played his virtual concert in Fortnite. It was a specially prepared event in the popular Battle Royale game, which loves to “romance” both with famous brands or popular film characters, but also with real celebrities and artists. The first of the five game appearances was watched by as many as 12.3 million players and already then the record was called. I also took part in it and I must admit it was quite nice – but yesterday’s event with Ariana Grande was even better.
I would be lying if I said that I know anything about this artist – I am sitting in completely different music and I cannot hum even one of her songs. So did my son, but yesterday we were sitting in Fortnite with minutes from 23:00, taking a seat and hoping that the game would not crash and we would not leave the online mode.
Fortnite concerts have nothing to do with live performances and are actually pre-scripted animations. Since everything is virtual, there are no limits and the creators can let their imagination run wild. And that’s how it was yesterday night (Polish time).
It all started with getting players involved in the Rift, where you could see the most important events in the story of Fornite.
To slide down the colorful goo after a while.
And fly on a pink umbrella over pink trees that bend like grass in the wind.
After a while, I jumped with the other players on the plane to lead the Storm King in a well-scripted scene. In addition, with a bit of competition, because at the end of the stage there is a summary of the points scored during the fight.
And then I watched an endearing scene where individual heroes got back up after a difficult confrontation with a much larger opponent.
To move between the stars and meet the star of the party – Ariana Grande.
Her short performance was fun, but also very abstract madness. Flying in bubbles, on a rainbow lama, watching him climb an ancient building. The artist’s virtual character, ending her performance, used a giant hammer to smash the Rift and send viewers to the map. And all this in the throes of colors, lights and explosions. I caught the screenshots on PlayStation 5 and although the game is still running on Unreal Engine 4 (Fortnite is to be transferred to Unreal Engine 5 later this year), the event was a great opportunity to recall how Fortnite developed visually and how much the next-gen version of the game differs from what I played 2 years ago on PS4 and PC.

How was it? Great – mainly because the creators of the concert neatly combined fragments in which we only watch with very interactive motifs. My son and I felt all the time that we were participating in the event, and not just watching what was happening on the screen. Completely different experience than during normal gameplay and in fact something completely different than normal game events. At the end of the event, we received a pink umbrella and we could fly around the map on the rainbow lama for a while to gain some experience points by flying through the colored circles in the sky. Cool thing.
Reportedly a year ago, Travis Scott won $ 20 million for his virtual performance. I shoot that Ariana Grande will put at least the same impressive sum of money, although I heard that she is an artist of a greater caliber, so the money can be even more.
I must admit that even if someone does not play Fortnite, it is worth taking part in such an event. And there is also an opportunity, because the concerts are planned for the entire weekend and there will be such an option until midnight from Sunday to Monday. The following dates and times (Polish time) are:
- Saturday, August 7 at 20:00
- Sunday, August 8 at 6:00 am
- Sunday, August 8 at 4:00 p.m.
- Monday, August 9 at 00:00
