Waiting to enjoy the new job of the father of the body horror, until 23 August a film marathon is scheduled with the best of this director’s filmography. For the occasion, the films are screened in the original version with subtitles.

THE FILMS OF THE CRONENBERG MARATHON AT THE CINEMA

The Cronenberg Marathon includes Rabid – Thirst for blood, cult film from 1976 in which a young girl transforms into an insatiable vampire after undergoing a skin graft; the restored version of Crash, which declines the theme of mutation starting from a novel by JG Ballard in which survivors of a car accident develop a sadomasochistic drive; the body horror Brood – The evil broodset in a horror clinic; Scanners, with protagonists of individuals endowed with telepathic powers with a lethal outcome. And then again Videodromean undisputed cult in which a mass media hallucination becomes a metaphor for the television civilization of the 1980s; The flywith actor Jeff Goldblum grappling with monstrous sci-fi melodrama; The naked meal, refined paranoid delirium that pays homage to the novel of the same name by William S. Burroughs. And then again, two films with Viggo Mortensen (also protagonist in Crimes of the Future together with actresses Léa Seydoux and Kristen Stewart): A History of Violencea noir thriller that reflects on the theme of identity, e A Dangerous Method which traces the turbulent relationship between psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung (Michael Fassbender), his mentor Sigmund Freud (Mortensen) and Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley). The Cronenberg Marathon ends on Tuesday 23 August with The promise of the murderer, a tense and powerful noir set among the Russian underworld starring always Viggo Mortensen together with Naomi Watts and Vincent Cassel, and Maps to the Starsa harsh critique of show business and the film industry, masterfully played by Mia Wasikowska, John Cusack, Robert Pattinson and Julianne Moore, who won La Palma Best Actress at the 67th Cannes Film Festival for this role.

THE FILM CRIMES OF THE FUTURE

There are some very strong scenesCronenberg explained before the world premiere of the film in May 2022 in Cannes. “I mean, I’m sure some will get up within the first five minutes. I’m sure about this. Some people who have seen the film have said they think the last 20 minutes will be very hard for the audience: even according to them, many will leave. Someone said she nearly had a panic attack“. What will the audience find on the big screen? A film that brings together the Canadian author’s obsessions. Crimes of the futurewhich takes its title from his previous 1970 film without being its remake, marks the director’s return to the body horror genre, already shown in films such as Shivers, Rabid, The Brood And The fly. A shocking and extreme, visceral film, in which Cronenberg returns to explore the evolution of man and the planet in relation to technology. An out-of-the-box vision, an unsettling science fiction film that encompasses all the very topical themes of the Canadian author’s filmography. From the official synopsis: “when the human species adapts to a synthetic environment, the body undergoes new transformations and mutations. With his partner Caprice (Léa Seydoux), Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen), the famous artist and performer, publicly shows the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde performances. Timlin (Kristen Stewart), a National Organ Registry investigator, obsessively follows their movements when a mysterious group is revealed … Their mission: to use Saul’s notoriety to shed light on the next stage of human evolution“.

THE EXHIBITION DEDICATED TO CRONENBERG

A great marathon also accompanied by an exhibition. The exhibition will be set up at the Quattro Fontane cinema in Rome and in Milan in the exhibition space on the ground floor of Anteo Palazzo del Cinema The New Meat, dedicated to David Cronenberg’s cinema. The exhibition gathers a total of 40 drawn works (illustrations, single-page comics) created by a wide selection of the most representative Italian artists and cartoonists as a tribute to the Canadian director and his films, which will be divided between the two rooms. The exhibition is an original artistic production, co-produced by COMICON and Marco Lucchetti Art Gallery of Lugano.
