Wednesday’s match at Wanda Metrapolitano in Madrid was the last chance for the team from Milan to join the fight for promotion to the next phase of the Champions League. Rossoneri, who after a few years of break returned to the ranks of the elite games, have not tasted the victory so far and after four rounds they were in the last place in the group B table with only one notch on their account.

The players of Atletico Madrid were also irritated after two consecutive defeats against Liverpool. Rojiblancos in their group stage appearances so far have only won one victory – at San Siro against the runners-up in Italy. The team of Diego Simeone also could not afford to fail.

Both teams played with an open visor, which could herald emotions. The first dangerous situation was created by the hosts, when Rodrigo De Paul stamped the goal post of the team from Milan in the third minute. Later, AC Milan came to the fore with unexpectedly long passages. Stefan Pioli’s charges were able to threaten the hosts several times, but Jan Oblak was not forced to intervene. As early as in the 5th minute, Brahim Diaz gave a show of individual skills, who dribbled several rivals, but his shot from the edge of the penalty area was very inaccurate.

In the 34th minute, Theo Hernandez hit the center of Pierre Kalulu from the air and he was not wrong. The Madrid team defended themselves for a long time and in the first part they could not seriously threaten the goal guarded by Ciprian Tatarusanu.

After the change of sides, both teams became more specific about their offensive actions. First, Alexis Saelemaekers tried from a distance, and two minutes later Thomas Lemar’s flat shot defended Tatarusanu in response.

Just like in the first part, the team from Italy left a better impression after their game. In the 62nd minute, Theo Hernandez sent the ball into the penalty area, and Simon Kjaer came in, but the ball flew over the local goal.

In the 72nd minute the visitors should take the lead. The action was distributed by Zlatan Ibrahimović, who entered the field a few minutes earlier, and Tiemoue Bakayoko was in a good position in the penalty area, but Stefan Savić managed to block his shot at the last moment.

The visitors deserved a goal from the course of the game, especially in the second half, and in the 87th minute they struck a decisive blow. Franck Kessi’s cross was used in cold blood by Junior Messias, who, completely unguarded from five meters, shoved the ball head into the helpless Oblak.

The victory in Madrid made the team of Stefano Pioli returned to the game for promotion to the next round of the Champions League. The team from Madrid was at the bottom of the B group table.

In the second group B game, the Liverpool team, unbeaten in this year’s Champions League, played in front of their home crowd FC Porto, which after a tie against AC Milan jumped to the second place in the table.

Jurgen Klopp gave some of the main players a break, with the upcoming marathon in the English Premier League in view. Hence, on the bench, among others, Virgil van Dijk, Diego Jota, or Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Nevertheless, the Anfield team could take the lead in the first part. In the 38th minute, Sadio Mane hit the Portuguese team’s net, but the referee saw offside and the goal was canceled after video verification. In the 52nd minute the hosts achieved their goal. Thiago Alcantara entered the list of shooters. In the 70th minute the hosts increased their lead and the reliable Mohamed Salah hit the net.

Jurgen Klopp’s team is unmatched in group B and after five series of matches they have a full score of 15 points.
