Australia. Novak Djokovic in custody is waiting for a decision on deportation

Novak Djokovic’s lawyers reported that the Serbian tennis player was sent to administrative detention in Melbourne on Saturday. He is to wait there for the court’s decision on his motion to block the deportation.

The world’s number one tennis player, Novak Djokovic, was sent to administrative detention in Melbourne on Saturday, where he is expected to await a court decision on his motion to block the deportation, lawyers of the Serbian tennis player said.

Witnesses quoted by the Reuters news agency saw Djokovic being brought to the Park Hotel, which was turned into an immigration detention center, around 5.30 PM Polish time. A federal court is expected to hear Djokovic’s case on Sunday. The hearing is scheduled for 9.30am local time.

On Friday, Australia’s Immigration Minister Alex Hawke announced that the government had revoked the Serb visa for the second time. “The presence of Djokovic in Australia who is not vaccinated against COVID-19 could create anti-vaccine sentiment,” Hawke said after the Serb was questioned again by immigration services and suggested that Djokovic should be expelled from Australia.

Vaccination waiver

The Belgrade player, with nine victories in the Melbourne event, announced last Tuesday that he had received a sick leave from compulsory vaccination against COVID-19 and is setting off on a trip to Australia. However, border services revoked his visa and he was taken straight from the airport to a hotel where asylum seekers are also accommodated.

On Monday, a court in Melbourne ordered the immediate release of the famous tennis player. His lawyers, in an application filed on Saturday, argued that he was exempted from vaccination due to a positive coronavirus test, which he obtained on December 16.
