“The government of Belarus has decided to ban a number of goods from countries applying illegal sanctions to the territory of Belarus,” stated the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday. As added, the relevant regulation will be signed soon.
In addition, restrictions on EU and UK airlines have been announced, which are to be “analogous” to the sanctions applied to the Belarusian state-owned Belavia airlines.
In response to the sanctions of Western countries, the Ministry of Diplomacy also announced “an expansion of the list of people for whom entry into the territory of Belarus and the Union State (Belarus and Russia) will be banned”.
“One of the most important steps” is to “continue the implementation of union programs and deepen economic integration with the Russian Federation, as well as build strong economic ties with partners from the Eurasian Economic Community” and the countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America.
A number of other “non-public” steps have also been announced.
The press release stated that Belarus’ actions could be canceled “if countries or groups of countries give up the logic of the Cold War era and return to constructive cooperation.”
Last Thursday The EU has passed another package of sanctions against Belarus. The restrictions consist of a ban on entry to the EU and an asset freeze. They include about 30 people and entities involved in repressions against civil society and bringing migrants to Belarus. They concern, among others Belavia Airlines. The United Kingdom, the USA and Canada have also announced the introduction of new sanctions.
