Ben Is Back: cast and plot
Ben Is Back is a 2018 film (but released in our cinemas the following year). The themes are different and important: the American family, which hides problems behind the perfect patina, the responsibilities and maternal tragedies that fight for the child until it runs into impotence, juvenile drug addiction. The director and screenwriter Peter Hedges directs his son Lucas, a talented actor seen in films such as Manchester By the Sea and Lady Bird and here engaged in the role of the young drug addict. Taking on the role of her mother we find an intense Julia Roberts. Kathryn Newton, Courtney B. Vance, Alexandra Park and Rachel Bay Jones complete the cast. The story of the film is set over a span of 24 hours and begins on Christmas Eve. We see drug addict Ben Burns (19) knocking on the front door. His mother, Holly, who also believed him in a rehabilitation center, welcomes him willingly, but his stepfather is less enthusiastic. After going to midnight mass – also to see the singing performance of Ben’s sister, Ivy – back home they realize that someone has kidnapped their dog. The young man understands that the responsibility for what happened lies with him and goes to the house of his ex pusher who has the animal. The man offers him a return, but in exchange Ben is forced to deal on his behalf. Meanwhile, Holly searches for her son.
