In a halo of light, she appears. The mere sound of his voice unleashes some sixty thousand people present. On stage, Beyoncé connects the tubes. “He’s the last of the great superstars,” says cultural science professor Kevin Allred. The figures speak for themselves: 7 albums ranked number 1; 300 million records sold; 32 Emmy Awards… So how do you chart your course in music when you’re Beyoncé’s youngest child and, inevitably, you evolve in the heavy shadow of your sister?
“Solange was the child who should be noticed but who was not listened to,” said David Lee Brewer, Beyoncé’s singing teacher. Because from an early age, even within the Knowles family, the youngest did not receive the same attention as her sister. In the cross portrait Beyoncé & Solange, the queen of pop and the soul princess – which also gives pride of place to Jay-Z’s wife – director Aaron Thiesen retraces the careers of these two artists. There are testimonials from childhood friends, dance and singing teachers, not to mention excerpts from an interview given in 2011 by Mathew Knowles, the father of the two sisters.
