Is Beyoncé dissociating herself from Lizzo? The American singer, who usually pronounces the name of her colleague in one of her songs, changed the lyrics by performing it on Tuesday evening in Foxborough (Massachusetts). A cut in the text which comes as Lizzo is the subject of a complaint from three former dancers for harassment.
Beyoncé was performing as part of her world tour, the Renaissance World Tourwhen she sang a remix of her hit Break My Soul. Title The Queens Remixthis version incorporates elements of the song vogue of Madonna as well as a spoken part during which Beyoncé pronounces the names of several artists.
“Betty Davis / Solange Knowles / Badu, Lizzo, Kelly Rowl'”, she usually recites. But as images posted on social networks show, Beyoncé this time repeated Erykah Badu’s name four times, bypassing Lizzo’s.
One stone, two tackles?
According CNN, the names pronounced by Beyoncé paraded on the giant screen located behind her. As usual, Lizzo’s appeared well.
Lizzo has often expressed her admiration for Beyoncé. By collecting the Grammy Award for recording of the year for his hit About Damn Timeshe had paid tribute to the singer: “You are clearly the artist of our lives!”, she had launched.
buzzfeed notes that this repetition of Erykah Badu’s name could also be a pungent response to the latter. A few days ago, the latter split an Instagram story comparing a hat worn on stage by Beyoncé with a hat that she wears herself, implying that the singer of Crazy in Love would have copied it.
A legal battle is brewing
The day before this performance, the American media had revealed that Lizzo was the subject of a complaint from three dancers who worked on her last tour. They accuse him of “harassment”, “discrimination” and “aggression” in particular, according to court documents consulted by AFP.
They say that Lizzo would have created a hostile climate on this tour. Among the facts mentioned in the complaint and relayed by variety, they claim to have been forced to rehearse for twelve hours in a row. One of them reports being forced to touch a naked dancer in a strip club and being blamed for her weight gain. Another says they were wrongly accused of drinking before the benefits. Two of them were fired, a third resigned shortly after.
Lizzo came out of silence on Thursday to denounce “false accusations”. According to Forbesshe called on the services of the lawyer Marty Singer, a star of the American bar, which counts among its customers Kim Kardashian, John Travolta, Arnold Schwarzenegger or Bill Cosby.
