With these words in a long and painful newsletter, entitled Loss of feeling and addressed to her followers, Bianca Balti announces that she is about to undergo a preventive double mastectomy, after having discovered some time ago that she has the BRCA1 genetic mutation, which exponentially increases the risk of getting breast and/or ovarian cancer. The same as Angelina Jolie, who in fact did the same surgery years ago. The 38-year-old top model from Lodi lists the reasons that led her to the painful choice of her. «Because I can’t afford to get sick as I carry, alone, the economic responsibility of everyone on my shoulders. Because I would like my girls – she writes – to find in me the strength to act if one day they too are diagnosed. Because I love life too much not to do what I can to preserve it. I felt proud to set a date, impatient to wait. But now that the time has come I don’t feel like it. I feel fragile. Scared of having to depend on others. Terrified of the pain I will feel. Disheartened in having to give up a part of my body that has defined my femininity up to now. Two days to go.”
