Black Widow’s first trailer, a solo movie of the heroine played by Scarlett Johansson, though intriguing, only shows how this movie should have been made years ago.
A while ago, there was an idea in the film industry that films starring women didn’t make enough money. This was totally broken with Wonder Woman (2017) from DC, and further solidified with Captain Marvel, who made over $1 billion in the box office this year.
It was because of this backward idea that the Black Widow never won a solo movie, even though the character was one of the original Avengers – and with the fame of Scarlett Johansson.
Now the heroine will finally have her solo movie adventure, but as ScreenRant says, it’s fair to say that Marvel is releasing this movie with a delay of at least two years.
Natasha deserved more
We all know that the Black Widow dies in Avengers: Ultimatum, sacrificing herself so that the Avengers can obtain Soul Jewel – and defeat Thanos in sequence.
Thus, the plot of his solo film must occur in the past, taking place between the events of Captain America: Civil War (2016) and Avengers: Infinite War (2017).
This takes much of the impact from the Black Widow’s plot, as we know Natasha’s final destiny. We know she won’t die in the solo movie, we know she won’t leave the Avengers.
The plot is a kind of filler that will fill a gap and honour a character loved by Marvel fans, but this movie could be so much more than just that.
If the Black Widow movie had been released after the Civil War, or even after Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), the plot would be much more relevant and engaging, as the character’s fate would be totally mysterious. Now Marvel has missed this chance.
Black Widow must be a fun and intriguing movie. New characters will be introduced – and some, like Yelena Belova, may be part of the future of MCU – but nothing erases the fact that this movie should have been released before. Natasha Romanoff deserved it, and Marvel fans as well.
