|She was a warrior. It was necessary in the old century if you wanted to survive. “|
The narrated story is divided into four chapters that do not follow the chronological order of events. The chronological order of the acts is: 3 (Genesis), 2 (Exodus), 1 (Revelation), 4 (Punishment). So, after the first act, Revelation, the following acts are what happened before and the fourth act is chronologically the last.
Chapter 1 – Revelation
In the old wild west Liz is a dumb young midwife married to Eli, a widower with whom she had a daughter, Sam. The new reverend who arrives at the village where they live disturbs Liz deeply. The man turns out to be a religious fanatic and, when Liz is blamed for deliberately killing an unborn child of her, he brutally kills her husband to punish her. Liz manages to escape with her daughter and teenage stepson Matthew.
Chapter 2 – Exodus
Joanna is found unconscious in a desert place by a family of Chinese nomads who, after saving her, take her to the mining town of Bismuth, where she is sold to a brothel called “Inferno” where strict rules apply. Years later, her friend and colleague Elizabeth is punished by cutting her tongue for biting the tongue of a client who wanted to force her to kiss him. While Elizabeth arranges her revenge and escape to move in with a widower, the reverend pays to have all the women in the brothel available, but with the sole purpose of possessing Joanna. When she rebels, Elizabeth enters her room with a knife and cuts him, but the man kills her. Joanna pulls the knife from her friend’s body and hits the man, then sets fire to and runs away from her, then cutting her tongue and assuming the victim’s identity.
Chapter 3 – Genesis
Young Joanna lives on a farm with her mother Anna and her father, a minister of a Protestant sect. Having entered puberty, she is commissioned by her father to look after the pigsty. One day Samuel and Wolf appear before her, two wounded gold diggers, and she, taking care of her, hides them among the pigs. Samuel later kills Wolf and feeds him to the pigs. Anna, despite being dominated by her abusive and violent husband, clashes with him when she realizes that she is threatening her daughter. The reverend reacts by whipping her wife to blood and imposing an iron bite on her. While the congregation is gathered in the church, Anna suddenly hangs herself in front of everyone. The next day, the reverend takes Joanna to church and begins to celebrate a wedding ceremony between him and her daughter. Samuel tries to save her from her incest, but the reverend kills him and, after having whipped the girl to “purify her”, rapes her. When her father sleeps soundly, Joanna runs away barefoot.
Chapter 4 – Punishment
As Liz with her baby girl and her stepson heads to her father-in-law’s house, her father ambushes them and kills the boy. Liz still manages to get with Sam to the house in the mountains, by a lake. Her father, now completely possessed, kills the old father-in-law and after tying Liz to her pole forces her to watch him whip the child. But when she is about to rape her granddaughter, Liz dislocates her arms and manages to get rid of her and she, grabbing an oil lamp, throws it at her father. The man is engulfed in infernal flames and Liz, taking up a rifle, shoots him making him fall out of the window. Some time later, when Liz is now settled with her daughter in her father-in-law’s property, a sheriff shows up and arrests her for the murder of the brothel owner committed by her friend Elizabeth. Led away in chains on a barge, Liz drops into the water and drowns.
|“I remember it well (says Sam, now an adult and also a mother). It’s as if she was always with me. Watching over me, protecting me. “|
