The fingerprints found at the crime scene were those of her neighbor and friend, Candy, who was arrested on June 27, 1980 on a murder charge. Unexpectedly, Montgomery immediately confessed to killing her and as soon as the trial began, in October 1980, she revealed that she was acting in self-defense.
Candy claimed that Betty had confronted her about her relationship with her husband and that as soon as Montgomery confirmed she was sleeping with him, Betty would attack her with an ax and that their verbal argument, degenerated into physical violence. , ended with the brutal killing of Gore.
