Jake Davis (Russell Crowe) is a bestselling New York novelist who is widowed after a car accident. Thus he finds himself, alone, raising his five-year-old daughter, Katie, amidst feelings of guilt that have never subsided and the pressures of the world. The loss becomes heavy for both to bear, so much so that the protagonist begins to suffer from mental disorders and is forced to separate from the child (Katie) and leave her in the custody of her uncles. She grows up and becomes a woman, studies and graduates in psychology. For years away from her father, she still battles the demons of her tormented childhood and the inability to abandon herself to a love story. Fathers and daughtersthe original title of the dramatic film, is the third American novel by Gabriele Muccino of 2015. This is a film in which the leap in quality of the director is seen. in the last scene Muccino leaves the foreground with a long shot chosen to best close the emotional circle of the story. The melodramatic register remains, but this time Muccino contains the emotions, does not let them overflow. In Fathers and Daughters there is all of Muccino: the rush of the girl chasing her dream, the panting of the characters in difficulty, the parental agony of promising their children what they are not sure they can keep, the visceral feelings and engulfing according to which a person must be “mine and nobody else’s”.
