This man was the inspiration for Charles Melton’s character May December said the film “offended” him.
Directed by Todd Haynes (carol, i’m not there), May December It’s a dark drama film starring Natalie Portman, who is about to play Julianne Moore’s character Gracie in the film. Gracie is notorious for her long-term relationship with Melton’s character Joe, which began when he was just 13 years old.
Screenwriter Sammy Burch confirmed that Gracie and Joe were inspired by the true story of Mary Kay Letourneau and Willie Frau. At the age of 34, Letourneau, a former teacher, was convicted of raping Fualaau, who was 12 years old at the time. The two married in 2005, shortly after Letourneau was released from prison.
The couple divorced in 2019 and Letourneau died in 2020.Now, Forao has spoken to PEOPLE about the film hollywood reporterand stated that the producers never contacted him personally while filming.
“It would be nice if they contacted me,” he said. “Had they contacted me, we could have created a masterpiece together. Instead, they chose to plagiarize my original story.”
“I was outraged by the entire project and the lack of respect shown to me, a true story that I lived through and am still living through.”
“I love movies—good movies,” Fualao continued. “I admire people who are able to capture the essence and complexity of real-life events. You know, movies allow you to see or realize something new every time you watch them.
“Writers and directors who can do that are perfect to work with because my story is not as simple as this movie (portrays),” he added.
May December Multiple Oscar nominations are expected, with Portman, Melton and Moore all receiving Golden Globe nominations for their performances.The awards will be presented tonight (January 7), when May December Also nominated for Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.
