China, Xi Jinping reappears in public: rumors of coup d’etat canceled

The Chinese leader Xi Jinping made his first public appearance since returning from a summit in Uzbekistan on September 16, thus erasing any speculation about an alleged coup d’état. Yesterday Xi visited an exhibition in Beijing on China’s accomplishments during its decade in power. On the nightly news of the state broadcaster CCTV, Xi appeared wearing a mask and looking at the screens in the Beijing Exhibition Hall, which featured many photos of him. He was accompanied by Premier Li Keqiang and other leaders, including all members of the Communist Party’s Politburo Standing Committee.

The visit to Uzbekistan was Xi’s first overseas trip in nearly 1,000 days since the start of the pandemic. Her absence of him in public upon his return had sparked a flurry of rumors online claiming that he had been overthrown in a military coup and placed under house arrest.

Unfounded rumors were further fueled by reports of flight cancellations and unverified videos of military vehicles on the roads. The speculation about the coup – which originated in Chinese dissident networks before being picked up and amplified by the Indian media – was so intense that the hashtag “chinacoup” was trending on Twitter over the weekend.
