Cincinnati, Berrettini eliminated by Tiafoe at the tie break. The blue has never lost the serve

The approach march of Matteo Berrettini ai Us Open, the last Grand Slam of the season, is certainly not triumphal. After exiting immediately in Montreal, the Roman tennis player was eliminated in the first round from Masters 1000 of Cincinnati. The blue has succumbed to the landlord, Frances Tiafoe, number 25 in the world, after a battle that lasted three hours and ended with a score of 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 and without ever losing the serve. The two tie-breaks in the first and third set are decisive, both won by the American who will face his compatriot in the second round Sebastian Korda.

Berrettini like Edberg

The match between Berrettini and Korda reminded tennis fans of a historic match, the semifinal of Wimbledon of 1991 between Michael Stich And Stefan Edberg. The Swede, like Berrettini 31 years later, lost the game without ever giving up his service. And it was an even more sensational defeat, because to win you had to get to three and the sets played were four: 4-6, 7-6, 7-6, 7-6. The German then won the tournament by beating Boris Becker in three sets.

Us Open, kicks off in two weeks

Compared to the Canadian hardcourt tournament, Berrettini fought despite paying a physical decline in the central part of the match. Against Carreno Busta, who would later win the tournament, the blue lost 6-2, 6-3. From Cincinnati at least the performance was largely satisfactory. In view of New York, now, Berrettini will have at least time to rest and improve his form. The tournament starts in two weeks and a change of gear is needed to make sense of the American tourneé.
