After the frankfurters, whose raw consumption has caused cases of listeriosis and even deaths (3 confirmed in Italy and a quarter yet to be confirmed), a new alert arrives regarding another product contaminated by the listeria bacterium, which can cause the disease listeriosis, potentially with very serious or even fatal outcomes. It is about the packs of salmon and mayonnaise sandwiches from the Allegri Sapori brand.
The company has ordered the recall from the market of some batches of this product by reporting, as stated on the website of the Ministry of Health, that it has found the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. The recommendation for consumers is clearly not to consume the product. Just return it to the store for a refund or replacement by October 10th.

Listeria in frankfurters
The alert of the Ministry of Health is maximum following theincrease in clinical cases of alimentary listeriosis registered in various Italian regions, due to contamination of food by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. Even more so after the case, dating back to 29 September last, of the80-year-old man who died in Alexandria following meningitis contracted after eating raw chicken frankfurters.
The checks, carried out by the working group set up by the Ministry of Health to deal with the spread of the bacterium, revealed one correlation between some of the clinical cases and the presence of the Listeria ST 155 strain in wϋrstel based on poultry meat produced by the Tre Valli farm – IT 04 M CE. The presence was also confirmed by sampling carried out at the plant (more info on the brand and the lots collected here).
Now the question is whether this case also belongs to the same strain that caused the death of three other people between December 2021 and June 2022 in Lombardy, Piedmont, Emilia-Romagna. This could therefore be the fourth case, but all checks by the authorities are ongoing.
The Tre Valli Farm has initiated all measures to protect the consumer with the withdrawal of the positive batches (1785417 and 01810919) and, in application of the principle of maximum precaution, of all those produced before 12 September 2022. It has also implemented a communication that reinforces what has already been indicated on the products directly in the points of sale.
Further investigations are currently underway on other matrices and other types of products that could be related to human cases of listeriosis.
Here are the dangerous symptoms of listeriosis, who is most at risk, diagnosis and treatment and how to avoid it with simple tips at home and in the kitchen.
How listeria is transmitted
There are many opportunities for contamination during the food production process, which is why almost all types of food can carry and transmit Listeria, but the infection usually occurs following consumption of dairy products, raw vegetables, meats, or, in particular, refrigerated foods that require no cooking before being eaten.
Infection can also occur by direct contact and during the slaughter of infected animals.
The main route of transmission for humans is food. As the National Institute of Health explains, healthy children and adults can occasionally become infected, but rarely develop a serious disease unlike in debilitated, immunosuppressed individuals and in pregnant women, where the disease is more severe.
The severity of the symptoms varies considerably according to the infectious dose and the state of health of the affected individual. They range from flu-like or gastrointestinal forms, sometimes accompanied by high fever, up to septicemic forms, meningitis or abortion in subjects at risk.
