– We have the most difficult situation compared to other waves – said Niedzielski. – We have over 18,000 hospitalization – he added.

– When it comes to contact with the virus, probably everyone in society will be exposed to it. As for unvaccinated people, virtually everyone will get it. In the case of hospitalization, this percentage is lower, but Omikron is very contagious – said the minister.

– We are constantly gathering knowledge and we have to take into account the darkest scenarios. From our point of view, the situation is different than in Western Europe. The Omicron appeared at the apogee of wave IV on the Delta variant. Many people have specific, i.e. short-term immunization, said Niedzielski. – But these are all assumptions, newer and newer information is appearing – he added.

– The darkest scenarios tell us about over 100,000. infections daily. There are scenarios that also say about 200 or 300 thousand. However, these are assumptions. We are trying to prepare for each scenario, but at the moment these are numbers – said the Minister of Health.

Polish patient zero – Mieczysław Opałka

The Polish “patient zero” was Mieczysław Opałka, a 66-year-old resident of Cybinka near Słubice. The then Minister of Health Łukasz Szumowski informed about the detection of the SARS-CoV-2 virus on March 4, 2020. Opałka had returned from Germany a few days earlier.

He came by coach from North Rhine-Westphalia to Świecko, and from there he went to Cybinka by car. 46 more people traveled with him by coach. Three of them were also diagnosed with coronavirus, the rest were quarantined.

The 66-year-old experienced fever, cough and shortness of breath during his illness. He also lost taste and smell.

The first death in Poland due to COVID-19

The first case of the Delta variant in Poland

The Delta variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus was first detected in April 2021 in India. He first appeared in Poland on July 9 in the Lubelskie Voivodeship. – The first case of the Delta variant, confirmed by laboratory tests, which was detected in the course of anti-epidemic measures, appeared in our province.
