Coronavirus. The Netherlands eases the lockdown. Hairdressers and prostitutes return to work

– There is still a serious threat of the virus and therefore we cannot open the country right away – the head of government said at a press conference. For this reason, restaurants, cinemas and theaters will remain closed.

However, all stores will be open and will be open until 17, except for supermarkets and drugstores, where shopping can be done until 20. Professions that require contact with the client will also resume operations, incl. hairdressers and prostitutes. Universities and gyms will be opened.

“ We have to learn to live with the coronavirus, ” said new Health Minister Ernst Kuipers, urging more use of medical face masks rather than cloth masks. However, this is a recommendation, not an obligation, he stressed.

A record number of infections was recorded in the Netherlands on Friday, the National Institute of Public Health (RIVM) reported. 35,521 new infections were reported, 2,112 more than the day before. This is the highest number since the start of the pandemic.

In the last seven days, RIVM has registered 218,000. 442 infections, which gives an average of 31 thousand. 206 infections a day. This average increases for the seventeenth consecutive day and is at its highest so far.

At the same time, the number of hospitalizations due to COVID-19 is falling. For the first time since November 1, fewer than 1,000 patients with this disease are hospitalized.
