Cristiano Ronaldo scores and seeks a draw for Manchester United against Chelsea

After being thrashed 4-0 by Liverpool and losing 3-1 to Arsenal, Manchester United ended a tough streak of games by drawing 1-1 with Chelsea on Thursday. The third straight defeat for one of the main rivals was avoided thanks to a goal scored by Cristiano Ronaldo, two minutes after Alonso opened the scoring for the London team at Old Trafford.

The result in the early match of the 37th and penultimate round of the English Premier League defines that United will end the current edition with their worst score in the Premier League era. In sixth place, with 55 points, practically out of contention for a place in the Champions League, the team led by Ralf Rangnick reaches a maximum of 64 points, the same amount achieved in the 2013/2014 season.

Chelsea, in turn, continues the journey in search of confirming its position within the G-4. At the moment, Thomas Tuchel’s team occupies third place with 66 points, six more than fourth Arsenal, which has 60.

As in the previous rounds of this final stretch, Rangnick had to deal with embezzlement to assemble United. The casualty list has the Brazilian Fred, out for the fourth game in a row, in addition to names like Jadon Sancho, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Wan-Bissaka, Pogba and Cavani.

Playing at home, the Manchester team showed some offensive momentum during the first half of the first half, but what caught the most attention was the space given between midfield and defence. With more possession of the ball, Chelsea was able to move between sectors and approach the opposing area. Anyway, it showed limitations at the time of completing the moves.

The London team’s best chances were in Havertz’s shots. First, the German faced De Gea and kicked him after receiving a good pass from Kante. A little later, he tried for the high, in a good header, and saw the United goalkeeper win the duel once again.

Chelsea’s superiority was only converted into a goal in the 14th minute of the second half. In the throw, Marcos Alonso took advantage of Havertz’s head deflection and hit hard, without letting the ball fall, to put the ball in the net. The advantage, however, only lasted two minutes, because, in the 16th minute, Matic got the ball after an error in the London exit and gave a little balloon into the area, where Cristiano Ronaldo dominated and equalized with a calm finish.

United return to the field next Monday, when they face Brentford, again at Old Trafford, for the 35th round of the English. Chelsea, in turn, face Everton, away from home, on Sunday.
