Despite the lockdown in Austria, the ski resorts will remain open

Over the weekend, people stormed open ski resorts in Austria to seize the last pre-lockdown opportunity to strap on their skis. But then there was a twist: it turned out that despite the lockdown, ski resorts could remain open. This decision was made by the National Council on Sunday evening.

For many ski lift operators, however, the initiative came too late for them to react in time – writes the RND portal. Consequently, “most of the ski resorts were closed on Monday”.

At Pitztal, the people in charge of the ski resorts first want to read the new regulation and only then decide whether to resume operations at all. The Kitzbuehel and Dachstein glacier ski resorts opened on November 22, writes the portal “skigebiete-test.de” quoted by RND. From Tuesday, skiing should also be possible on the Stubai Glacier, the Kitzsteinhorn and the Moelltal Glacier, and Schladming will start the season on Friday.

According to the “Tiroler Tageszeitung”, the ski areas of Soelden, Kaunertal Glacier and Zillertal will probably only reopen after lockdown on 13 December.

Ski areas open during lockdown they have to follow even stricter rules than before. It was in force at the beginning of the season on the slopes 2G rulewhich means that only vaccinated or cured persons could use the extracts. Now the obligation to wear a mask has been added, both in ski lifts and gondolas, as well as in waiting rooms. Only FFP2 masks are allowed. Restaurants, bars and hotels must also remain closed in the ski areas.

This means that only self-catering day trips are possiblealthough some restaurants on the slopes offer take-out options. The travel portal austria.info has announced that it is not possible to travel to Austria during the blockade. However, thanks to the open ski areas, day trips from Germany are in principle possible – at least for those who have been vaccinated and recovered, reports RND.

A nationwide lockdown for all residents is in force in Austria from Monday. The decision to introduce the blockade is explained by the government with record increases in the number of coronavirus infections. The lockdown will last for at least 10 days, and may be extended to 20 if necessary.

Austrians are only allowed to leave their homes during the lockdown for good reason, including outdoor exercise, such as skiing. Until Sunday, everyone assumed that only cross-country skiing and ski touring would be allowed.

Nationwide lockdown in Austria from today. Compulsory vaccination from February
