DIRT RALLY 2.0 TEST

Forget the misunderstanding Dirt 4, the arcade addiction of Codemasters rally, which promised us in addition to a mainstream approach a mode called simulation, all fans of Dirt Rally were waiting full of hope. Far from being a bad game, the ambiguity of the communication around the title has finally received more than a sim-racer who, definitely, had only to wait for the announcement of an official sequel to Dirt Rally first name. It is now done with the arrival of Dirt Rally 2.0, which in passing offers a nice nod to one of its greatest predecessors released in 2002. What reassures so the most feverish of you?

RALLY AND YOU

After at least three years running along, across, and across the various Dirt Rally specials flying in hand and perhaps even VR headphones screwed on the head, here is finally new blood looming on the horizon. From the outset, the main menu of the game tells us: we will reconnect with the austerity of the past to focus on the most important. The career mode is the perfect example, there will be no frills or scenario here, Dirt Rally 2.0 is not once again Dirt 4. Place here in mechanics and driving with a very classic progression important to begin with the oldest models of vehicles before successively accessing the higher categories thanks to the funds raised while optimizing your team. Do not panic, alongside a mode dedicated to the historic rally is the time trial, which will allow you to freely choose the special and the car of your choice among the fifty available (H1, H2, H3, Group B, R2, A, R4, R5, and the surprising but welcome Rally GT). Note that the queen category WRC is absent, the fault of a license obtained by the competition. The variety of cars on offer is a truly significant point that will be further strengthened in the future by the addition of DLC. But we will come back a little further on this point …

DIRT RALLY 2.0

At the environmental level, six venues are to be launched at the launch for a total of 72 specials with Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, Poland, Spain and finally New England. Asphalt, dirt, mud, gravel all on narrow, technical and tortuous specials respond well to the call but yet, you will immediately notice that the snowy tracks are absent. At first in any case, because there also promised soon via paid DLC that will add the rallies of Monte Carlo, Sweden, and Germany. And it is here, even before we get to the heart of the subject of this test, that we feel the biggest fault. Remember when it was released, Dirt Rally, as good as it was, had mainly suffered from its lack of content, unfortunately never filled afterward. Expected at the turn, Codemasters had the perfect opportunity here to correct this gap and yet, against all odds, the studio prefers to play it sneakily by trimming its title voluntarily. A rally game without special snowy you seems inconceivable? Then you will have to put your hand in the pocket to fix it. A method flush with daisies,

2.0 PILOTING?

DIRT RALLY 2.0

Let’s dive into the heart of the Dirt Rally experience that everyone is waiting for, driving. After having passed if you want by the box settings, still pushed too, by the way, you are finally on the starting line foot to the floor and handbrake extended, ready to unleash the horses. From the very first meters, whether it’s driving a 150-horsepower Lancia Fulvia granny or driving a monstrous 550-horsepower Audi Quattro, the developers have achieved the feat of pushing realism even further. More than ever, the slightest information will be distinctly felt, from the mass of the vehicle to its motricity. Each car within multiple categories has its own behavior for as many chassis to tame.oupled with a progressive deformation and dynamic weather, the tracks retranscribe the nature of their coating with striking realism, the opportunity to note that the behavior on asphalt, previously perfectible, has benefited from the same work of a goldsmith. Dirt Rally 2.0 holds a physical engine with little onions that will require you no more and no less relearn to fly. Expect your first races to endure the harsh laws of physics, from understeering on a poorly negotiated curve to devastating aquaplaning on a waterlogged liner. A good use, skilfully dosed, the gas pedal, the brake but also the handbrake will be essential to effectively position your car in all situations in a basic game without any help to driving (although they can be freely activated by the player). Dirt Rally may be related to a Die and Retry or the slightest mistake will often be fatal, no rewind being, logically, available. If you will often need hours of practice to make your best time, the satisfaction will only be better in the end. the game is still playable on the controller, although necessarily less accurate. Expect good cold sweats on the most powerful machines thanks to an impressive feeling of speed.

The master of his category

Remains a discipline in its own right that we have not yet addressed: the rallycross. Initiated three years ago by Dirt Rally, the latter is back this year with a major asset, holding the license WRX. Official cars and drivers are therefore offered to participate in the world championship on a selection of eight real circuits. The sensations offered are very different from those offered in a rally, expect the race phases under high voltage with a particularly aggressive AI that will not hesitate to play the bumper to clear a path. With its succession of fast and nervous races (qualifying, semifinal, and final), the rallycross brings a real wind of freshness and madness between two WRC stages. Leaving to have DLC, hope that new circuits will also be proposed. Far from being the highlight of the first game, the graphic part of Dirt Rally 2.0 is once again to fully convince. The title offers beautiful lighting effects, a significant color palette, and a successful artistic direction, but clearly fails to meet the criteria expected in 2019. The whole is still acceptable and especially perfectly fluid. But in the same way as its big brother, Dirt 2.0 plays in a category other than the race to the graphics, which will not be in any case a break for the fans of the first hour.
