One of the most anticipated titles of the year has arrived in cinemas: Don’t Worry Darling by Olivia Wilde (38), with Harry Styles (26), Florence Pugh (26), Chris Pine (42) and the same director / actress. A trip to 1950s America: will it really be 1950s America?

After the presentation at the Venice Film Festival, the much talked about arrived in theaters Don’t Worry Darling (duration: 2h), second direction by the actress Olivia Wilde (the Thirteen of Dr House). Starring the boyfriend Harry Styles.

From the love story on the set to the spit-gate: all the gossip around Don’t Worry Darling

So far, more than the film we have talked about everything that is said to be “around”. Extra-cinematic reasons for gossip (the inverted bond between director and protagonist). Real or fake quarrels on set (Shia LaBeouf, first chosen actor, kicked out by Wilde; strained relations with the protagonist Florence Pugh). Finally, for the (allegedly) Harry Styles spit at the address of Chris Pine, his partner in the film, at the official premiere in Venice …

Don’t Worry Darling: is there more besides gossip?

How is the movie Don’t Worry Darling? Maybe excessive, at times a little déjà vu, however to be seen on the big screen. Because? Because Wilde undoubtedly has a remarkable aesthetic sense, places important issues at the center of the stage. And it has a group of actors – perhaps unpleasant even in reality – but undoubtedly effective and in part.

Don’t miss it on the big screen!

Florence Pugh is Alice in Don’t Worry Darling

America, 1950s. Alice (Florence Pugh) and Jack (Harry Styles) are beautiful and happily married. They live in an exclusive neighborhood in Victory, an industrial city bordering the Californian desert, where a top secret experiment project is taking place. Families engaged in the project are entitled to a large one pastel colored cottage and to the (presumed) perfection of bourgeois living. According to the logic of the time, wives must stay at home to wait for their husbands to return from work.

Jack’s boss, Frank (Chris Pine), is a kind of charming and charismatic guru-guru… Alice will begin to be plagued by revealing nightmares. What is really behind the Victory’s flamboyant “paradise”by extension the USA in the 1950s / 1960s?

The two protagonists, Florence Pugh and Harry Styles. The costumes in the film are by Arianne Phillips, who won an award at the Venice Film Festival.

Where was Don’t Worry Darling filmed?

Does Victory’s paradise really exist? The film was shot largely, as far as the exteriors are concerned, in Palm Springs, a mythical location beloved by the Californian jet set in the 1950s. Not only Hollywood …

In particular, the villas we see in the film are real. Frank’s house (Chris Pine) is the Kaufmann Desert House built by the Austrian architect Richard Neutra in 1946. The house was built for Edgar J Kauffman sr, a very wealthy and sophisticated merchant from Pittsburgh. One of the most famous private buildings in America.

But other famous Palm Springs villas appear in the film. In Canyon View Estates is the home of Alice and Jack. The town hall and the Palm Springs Visitor’s Center, now an art gallery, were used as locations. They too are the works of a famous architect of the twentieth century: Albert Frey.

After the cool Booksmart (in Italy it came out with the titolaccio The revenge of the losers), Wilde was eagerly awaited for his second direction (he also says: it’s Bunny, friend of the protagonist). The result is perhaps less exciting than expected. Above all, unlike the first work, which is not very original. A bit’ The wives factory (1975) and its remake, The perfect woman (with Nicole Kidman). Even a little Truman Show. A bit of an episode of Black Mirror. America in the fifties like mythical USA model – in reality a closed world, warmongering and male chauvinist – has already been focused on and criticized by the cinema.

The other limitation of the film is that it is not very scary. For a fantahorror – however political, feminist and metaphorical – it is no small matter.

Olivia Wilde and Florence Pugh in the film

But what Wilde never lacks is a remarkable aesthetic sense. The first half hour immerses us, literally, thanks to the details in the USA of a bygone era. He manages to play with the contrasts between pastel colours of (apparent) daydreaming reality and the livid colors of (revealing) nightmares.

In addition, it can count on an effective cast, in which the protagonist stands out Florence Pugh (Little Women). It has both the strings of the tragic and those of lightness. The stars are also good Harry Styles and Chris Pine being insufferable

In reality how will they be? We will never know the truth about spitting, tension and anything else …
