Drew Barrymore: ‘I could give up sex for years’

Giving up sex for years? What might sound decidedly strange to most, would not be a problem at all for Drew Barrymore, the former child prodigy who became famous thanks to the role of Gertie in ET The Extra Terrestrial.

During an episode of The Drew Barrymore Showthe television program she hosted, the actress indeed commented on the statement made by Andrew Garfield who told how, to prepare to play the part of Father Sebastião Rodrigues in the film Silence by Martin Scorsese, in addition to studying with a Jesuit father, followed fasting days and practiced thesexual abstinence for six months.

“Six months doesn’t seem like a long time to me. I mean, so what?” Drew Barrymore commented with a touch of her usual irony, later specifying that for her abstinence could last even years.

L’sexual abstinence practiced by former Spider-Man Andrew Garfield is part of the method acting he plans to fully enter the shoes of some characters through physical and emotional transformation. Barrymore herself said that she followed the method to immerse herself in some parts, particularly when she was filming Gray Gardens – Dive Forever film in which she plays Edie Beale, a role that even earned her the Golden Globe.

It is certainly not the first time that the 47-year-old actress, mother of two daughters, has shown that she has no fear of speaking without filters. After the end of her third marriage, the one with Will Kopelman, father of her two daughters, Olive and Frankie, the actress had declared that she had definitively finished with marriage, an obsolete institution which – she said in an interview with People – made sense «when life lasted an average of thirty years and the person closest to you was three days away on horseback».
