Drinking coffee reduces the risk of developing this disease -– there are new research results

As there is still no effective cure for Alzheimer’s disease, researchers are paying more and more attention to remedies. A recent study published in the journal Frontiers of Aging Neurosciene found that in people who consumed coffee regularly, the rate of cognitive decline as they age slowed significantly.

Will coffee consumption be entered on the prescription?

Dr. Samantha Gardener of Edith Cowan University in Perth, who is the lead author of the study, believes that the results obtained may be particularly useful for people who are at risk of cognitive decline but have no symptoms.

“We want to develop some clear guidelines that middle-aged people should follow, and we hope that this may have a lasting effect” – admitted the researcher.

Dr. Gardener’s team found that regular coffee consumption improved brain function among 200 people over 60 years of age. The study was conducted for ten years in Australia. Brain scans showed that coffee strengthened specific areas of the gray matter – especially those related to executive functions. This set of mental skills includes memory, intelligence, abstract thinking, reading, and writing.

We use each of these functions every day to learn, work and function in everyday life. In dementia, these skills deteriorate significantly – especially as the disease progresses.

Research has shown a link between coffee and several important markers associated with Alzheimer’s disease. “We found that test participants who did not have memory impairment and who drank more coffee had a much lower risk of developing mild cognitive impairment – which often precede Alzheimer’s disease – or developing it.“Said Dr. Gardener.

Coffee also slowed down the accumulation of beta-amyloid, toxic proteins that clump into plaques and block synaptic function, preventing the transmission of signals from one nerve cell to another.

Dr. Gardener described the study results as “encouraging,” suggesting that coffee consumption was an easy way to avoid neurological deterioration. “If average a cup of coffee that we prepare at home has 240 ml, increasing the daily consumption to two cups may reduce the decline in cognitive function after 18 months by 8%. “

How many cups of coffee should I consume?

The study also found that coffee, rich in caffeine and plant chemicals called flavonoids, increases blood flow. However, it has not been possible to establish the maximum number of cups of coffee consumed per day that would provide a beneficial effect. The analysis also did not reveal whether the coffee worked differently when it was brewed using different methods, and whether the presence of milk or sugar mattered.

Scientists are not yet able to determine exactly which ingredients of the drink have a positive effect on brain health. The main “culprit” may be caffeine, a natural compound that stimulates the brain and nervous system.

Dr. Gardener admitted research into the relationship between coffee consumption and brain function will continue. “We need to assess whether coffee consumption may one day be recommended as part of a lifestyle to delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.”

Every day, 25 million liters of coffee are consumed in the world. The statistical inhabitant of Finland drinks the most coffee (12 kg of coffee a year!). A statistical Pole eats only 3 kg.

It is estimated that from 15 to 21 million people suffer from Alzheimer’s disease worldwide, and in Poland this number has already exceeded 350,000.
