Drought, Hitler’s fleet resurfaces from the Danube (twenty Nazi ships sunk)

When it is said that history resurfaces from the waters. Thanks to the current drama of the Drought which is consuming the water basins in Europe. It happened to the Danube one of the great European rivers that is suffering from the phenomenon of the lowering of the water level, where the carcasses of over twenty warships of Adolf Hitler’s fleet in the Black Sea sank during the Second World War near the Serbian port city of Prahovo. An impressive sight that the stretch of the Danube in Serbia is offering.

The contours of the carcasses appear worn by the decades spent deep in the river silt. And today the ghost wrecks terrifically return to evoke the apocalypse of war and Nazism. As reported by Reuters, the resurfaced ships are among the hundreds of Hitler’s fleet in the Black Sea, once a “flagship” of Nazi Germany which in 1944 were sunk along the Danube as they retreated from the advancing Soviet forces. Finds that over time have even hindered river traffic during low water levels.

Weeks of drought have caused the water level in the river to drop dramatically, and this is one of the most unexpected consequences. The news attracted international media attention. According to the Washington Post, many more ships, buried under the river’s sandbanks, are likely to resurface. But the Nazi ships that now shore up the waters of the Danunbio are also attracting the attention of specialists. The young Serbian Transport Minister Belimir Trajilović told reporters that at least ten thousand explosive devices are hidden in the exposed rubble.

It is not an isolated phenomenon. Continental drought is offering other historical surprises. In Spain, the Valdecanas reservoir dried up and revealed a prehistoric stone circle. A monumental context known to scholars but practically invisible. It is nicknamed the “Spanish stonehenge”, Officially named as the Dolmens of Guadalperal. Here the water level has dropped to 28% of capacity. The consequence is that this site already discovered in 1926 but covered by water in 1963 and seen only four times since then shows off its beauty again.
