The jokes in Dungeons and Dragons – Honor for Thieves they won’t spoil the RPG atmosphere. Even if the film will be a comedy it does not mean that it will be a sort of insult to the famous tabletop role-playing game. The next movie of Dungeons and Dragons features an all-star cast including Chris Pine as Edgin the Bard, Michelle Rodriguez as Holga the Barbara, Regé-Jean Page as Xenk the Paladin, Justice Smith as Simon the Sorcerer, Sophia Lillis as Druid Tieflieng Doric and Hugh Grant as Thief Forge Fitzwilliam.
The film, which was written and directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley of Game Night – Guess Who Dies Tonight?follows this party on their unlikely adventures as they embark on a perilous quest to recover a long-lost artifact, albeit in a light-hearted tone.

During a recent interview, Goldstein and Daley explained why the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons movie, while a comedy, won’t insult the original game or its passionate fans. The writer-directors of the film explain that
The spirit of the D&D game is a group of people around a table, sometimes shitting each other, but not fucking the game itself.
That’s why they approached their film adaptation in the same spirit, as you can read in Goldstein’s full explanation below:
It all starts with the character. It doesn’t matter what genre it is. What interests the public is: ‘Who are we following and why should we invest in them?’. This has always been our approach, regardless of size and scale. I want to hang out with the characters we create. And I wouldn’t want to date someone who takes things too seriously. For us it is very fun. Like, who makes these rules? We can’t just turn off that part of our brain that questions things, so we question all the data in the fantasy genre. That’s part of the fun of making a movie like this!

Comments from writer-directors are also reassuring that, even if Dungeons & Dragons – Honor for Thieves is a comedy, it is not an outright Monty Python and the Holy Grail parody, nor will it mock the original game. The film will be released on March 31, 2023.
