HAWAII – “To all our local heroes: stay strong”. Actor Dwayne Johnson, who spent part of his childhood in Hawaii, spoke to express his emotion after the terrible fires that occurred in the archipelago last week.
The 51-year-old actor, of Samoan origin through his mother, posted a message of support and recognition for the archipelago and all the personnel on the front on Sunday August 13. “We are heartbroken but our faith and our mana (a supernatural force widespread in nature, according to Hawaiian culture, editor’s note)are strong, he writes.
“To first responders, care teams, hotels, local businesses, organizations on the ground and to all of our local heroes: stay strong, we love you and are grateful.”
The one who is known by the nickname “The Rock” also relayed images of the places damaged by these deadly fires, which had killed at least 96 people on Monday.
“Cancel your trip to Hawaii”
For several days, actor Jason Momoa, of Hawaiian origin, has regularly published strong warning messages on his Instagram account.
In particular, he calls on tourists to “cancel (their) trip to Hawaii”, to ensure their safety as much as possible and appeals for donations for the victims. The interpreter ofAquaman also gathers the latest information available on the fires.
The human toll from the fires exceeds that of the last natural disaster in this American state, the 1960 tsunami, which killed 61 people. The flames notably ravaged the seaside town of Lahaina (13,000 inhabitants), swallowing houses, cars, hotels or businesses.
By Saturday afternoon, only 3% of the search area had been covered by dog teams searching the rubble for possible victims, according to Maui County Police Chief John Pelletier, quoted by Reuters. “None of us know the magnitude yet” of the disaster, he said at a press conference.
