After 1,000 days of exploring Mars, NASA’s Perseverance rover is studying rocks that reveal several eras in Mars history. The delta of a billion-year-old river.
Scientists are investigating this area of Mars, called Jezero Crater, to see if they can find evidence of ancient life recorded in the rocks.
NASA gave a guided tour of the detailed panorama of the rover’s location captured by the Mastcam-Z instrument in November 2023.
Composed of 993 single images and 2.38 billion pixels, This 360 degree mosaic Views in every direction from what the rover’s science team calls “Mount Airey.”
Parts of the rover itself are visible in the scene, and the edges appear more distorted due to image processing.
Color enhancement applied to images to increase contrast and highlight color differences. This adjustment allows mission scientists to use their everyday experience to interpret the landscape by approximating the scene under Earth’s lighting conditions. Mars will appear darker and redder, NASA reports.
