The days leading up to the Mexican Grand Prix wrote another important chapter in the almost thirty-year history of the Sauberready to open a new parenthesis from 2026. In fact, starting from that season, the Swiss team will have the power unit provided byAudiwhich will thus materialize its debut in Formula 1. In addition to this, the same German company – owned by the Volkswagen Group – could also acquire a majority stake in the Swiss team, estimated at 75%.
Regardless of what happens, Sauber will also look to the imminent future, this time limited to the partnership with theAlfa Romeo, title sponsor of the Hinwil team. The agreement, made official in 2018, will expire at the end of next season, with the name of the historic brand that will disappear, as already communicated by Stellantis at the end of August this year.
Regarding this decision he intervened Carlos TavaresCEO of the same Dutch company, who thus commented on Alfa Romeo’s departure from Sauber and F1 in an interview with L’Equipe: “You have to look at things objectively – he explained to the French sports newspaper – the partnership we had with Sauber it was a quality deal, negotiated very well by my predecessor. We have exploited it very well during the recovery period of the Alfa Romeo brand on the market. Today the brand is very profitable and in full recovery. Conditions are changing and we absolutely do not want to put in F1 the enormous amount of resources that will be invested by some of our competitors. Therefore we retire cleanly and kindly. With this partnership with Sauber, we used F1 more than they used us. From this point of view, everything that has happened is rational. The work is done. We will return to another discipline that has not yet been decided. Jean-Philippe Imparato, the head of Alfa Romeo, will submit his options to me. One thing is certain – he added – the brand will also be present in motorsport after 2023, when our agreement with Sauber ends. Given the history of the brand, there is no doubt that this is the case “.
