Fifty Shades Darker – which airs this evening at 21.23 on Italia 1 – is the second chapter of the film adaptation taken from the literary saga of Fifty Shades of Gray, written by EL James. A saga that, in spite of the opinion of critics and experts, has had a huge success with the public, so much so that it has become a real case in the publishing market that has also driven many cinemagoers crazy. It is therefore not surprising that the two protagonists of the film, Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan have become stars thanks to the interpretation of Ana and Christian.
Fifty shades darker, the plot
Directed by James Foley and released in theaters in 2017, Fifty Shades Darker picks up pretty much where the previous film left off, Fifty Shades of Gray. Anastasia “Ana” Steele (Dakota Johnson) has had to come to terms with the fact that billionaire Christian Gray (Jamie Dornan) is unable to reciprocate her feelings. For the woman, therefore, the real challenge is to leave the past behind and try to forget the fiery liason who had linked her to the billionaire with a passion for bondage. Determined to move on with her life, Ana manages to find work in the publishing company headed by Jack Hyde (Eric Johnson), who seems to have a soft spot for the girl. Christian, meanwhile, realizing that he misses Anastasia, proposes to review the terms of their contract, so that they can spend time together again, in the name of her passion. Jack, who feels jealous of Christian for reasons beyond Anastasia’s predilection, will look for a way to take revenge on both of them for the various insults they have suffered. But on the horizon there is another threat that jeopardizes Anastasia’s serenity: in fact, the girl will be tormented by her ex (Beautiful Heathcote) by Christian, prompting her to reflect on whether it’s worth staying with a man with whom she can’t feel entirely safe.
The rituals of the two leading actors in the sex scenes
It is certainly no mystery that the whole saga of Fifty Shades of Gray put the sex at the center of its narrative universe. Although they are not overtly erotic films – unlike the books, which instead are cataloged in this genre – all the films of the saga tell the story of the encounter/clash between two human beings who first of all want to serve every desire that belongs to the sexual sphere. In this sense, Anastasia is seen as a woman who is “accompanied” towards her sexual liberation by a much more experienced, erotic man with well-defined fantasies, who opens the doors to a hitherto unknown world for the girl. Naturally the massive presence of sex scenes related to thehardcore it prompted the leading actors to seek and find a way to deal with them, do their job and not run the risk of feeling uncomfortable. According to the website of theInternet Movie Database, really, Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson they had real rituals that they went through before having to pose in front of the camera for the more explicit scenes of Fifty Shades Darker: a sort of ritual / talisman that would help them relax before having to shoot.
According to what can be read on the website, Dakota Johnson tried to relax before a particularly intense scene from a sexual point of view by drinking a glass of whisky. Jamie Dornan, on the other hand, preferred to release tension by doing push-ups, training the body in order to keep the mind free from thoughts that could have been annoying when he was in front of the camera. These two rituals, which the two actors performed in isolation and individually, then converged in the habit of having long conversations with each other in order to be able to decide together how to shoot the various sex scenes after the director had given them instructions general to follow. In this way the two actors were able to bring the question of sex to a strictly working level, which prevented them from feeling uncomfortable or embarrassed. However, it should be emphasized that, regardless of the precautions taken by the actors to feel at ease during filming, all the sex scenes were created with the use of some special “prostheses” which had the task of covering the private parts of the actors, so that they never really come into contact with each other.
