Julie Roué meets the Belgians Ann Sirot and Raphaël Balboni for their second feature film after “Une vie démente” (2021, music by Nils Frahm). This whimsical comedy tests the fidelity of a couple through a fantastic element (unable to have children, Sandra and Remy – Lucie Debay & Lazare Gousseau – must go back to bed to recover once with all their exes). Each sexual encounter on this journey is the subject of a pop vignette, in different forms, that of the clip, the installation or the dance. These choreographic moments are illustrated with percussive and aerial sounds (the flute associated with a trip hop atmosphere). We also hear a baroque escape evoking Bach.
A Haunting in Venice – Hollywood Records (September 15, 2023)
• (At the cinema on 13-09)
Hildur Guðnadóttir meets Kenneth Branagh in this historical and detective film, set in devastated post-war Venice. For the second time since “Belfast” (2022), the Scottish director does not use his faithful composer Patrick Doyle. The composer of “Joker” was seduced by the dark side of Agatha Christie’s novel, creating a score that is both romantic and raw which revolves around a distressing atmosphere, playing on primitive sounds and the plaintive breathing of the instruments wind (notably the solo clarinet), to evoke the supernatural and the anxiety of the characters.

ROB (Robin Coudert) signs the music for the fantastic film by Just Philippot which called on Vincent Cahay on “La Nuée” as well as the duo The Penelopes on the short film “Acide” at the origin of this feature. Clouds of acidic and devastating rain fall on France. A fractured family (Selma, 15, and her two separated parents) must support each other to find refuge. The composer offers a climatic score which illustrates a heavy and threatening atmosphere, then which evolves in the direction of the characters, recounting their links, until a poignant finale with the appearance of a soft melody on the guitar to support the renewed affection of a father and his daughter, like a light after the chaos.

Jean-Baptiste de Laubier (Para One) and Arthur Simonini score the music for the first feature film by Nicaraguan director Laura Baumeister de Montis. The score accompanies the emotional journey of Maria, 11 years old, who lives with her mother Lilibeth on the edge of a public dump before finding herself alone, lost. The crystalline and elegiac notes bring a dreamlike dimension, in particular thanks to the contribution of a celestial vocal presence, affirming that the child is in contact with the world of dreams.

The American artist and composer EmmoLei Sankofa signs the music for Danielle Henderson’s series with singular sounds (tribal percussion, a female voice) and anxiety-provoking (dissonances) which embrace the point of view of Nella, confronted with anxieties within his company. • 7 episodes on Netflix (13-09)
Amine Bouhafa signs the music for the series by Tristan Séguéla – which he returns to after “A Happy Man” (2023), biopic on Bernard Tapie (played by Laurent Lafitte), and his romantic journey from singer to businessman, from minister to prisoner . The score oscillates between the romantic orchestra for the love story, brass for the flamboyance of his rise (depicting him as a James Bond character), and rhythmic percussion in a rawer dimension relating the primary temperament, instinctive and tenacious of the character. A flute refers to his childhood and evokes his aspiration for freedom, like a bird that has left its nest. We also hear period songs, notably French variety from the 60s and 70s (Michel Polnareff, Jacques Dutronc, and Claude François…), as well as classical pieces (Handel, Mozart). Laurent Lafitte performs two songs by Bernard Tapie, “Passeport Pour Le Soleil” and “Une Vie de succes”.

Rob (Robin Coudert) signs the music for the detective series by Nikola Lange & Thomas Mansuy with electronic sounds that evoke a horrific dimension (a very John Carpenter synth that the composer had already practiced on “Maniac” or “Revenge”), in a satirical shift (pushing pitch and other effects to the extreme). More technoid and festive pulsations refer to the fairground context in which the action takes place.

VINYL

– Discograph (CD & Vinyl: September 17, 2023)
Kyle Eastwood, eminent jazz double bassist and leader of his quintet, reinterprets the timeless melodies of his father’s films (as director or actor), signed by some of the greatest masters of the genre, such as John Williams (The Sanction ), Ennio Morricone (A Fistful of Dollars, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly), Lalo Schifrin (Inspector Harry, Magnum Force), and even himself with Michael Stevens (Letters from Iwo Jima) and Clint Eastwood as author of themes (Bridges of Madison County, Changeling, Unforgiven, Flags of Our Fathers). The symphony orchestra does not swallow up the refined melodies, always with the spirit of jazz highlighted by the solo instruments (piano, guitar, brass). This compilation accompanied by a concert tour is a tribute from a son to his father, both intimate and universal.
