Five Celebrities Who Spent a Fortune Buying NFTs | Bitcoin and Virtual Currencies

NFTs have been successful in the digital art market and have moved large numbers. That’s because the technology works as a kind of “digital authenticity certificate”, giving originality to the artistic product, be it a photo, music or video. As the digital work is unique and can be collectible, users buy NFTs expecting the pieces to appreciate in value and, over time, to become more expensive. Whether because of this expectation of high financial returns, or because of the popularization of tokens, the NFTs caught the attention of the famous.

Celebrities like Justin Bieber, Neymar and Snoop Dogg have spent millions of dollars to have digital art in their collections. Striker Neymar Jr. is one of the biggest names in football to enter the world of NFTs. On January 20 of this year, he posted on his Twitter a photo of an artwork from the Bored Ape Yacht Club, one of the most valuable and popular collections of digital art, famous for the images of monkeys. On the occasion, the star of the Brazilian team bought two images.

Neymar’s post, who changed his profile picture to an art from the collection, refers to the purchase of the BAY token #6633, made for 159.99 Ethereum (ETH), the equivalent of BRL 2.7 million. His second purchase was BAY #5269, art also shared by the player on social media. The image had a value of 189.69 ETH, equivalent to BRL 3.29 million at the time. That is, Neymar spent almost R$ 6 million on NFTs.

Shortly after Neymar shared his purchase, singer Justin Bieber also entered the digital art market. The pop music star took an interest in the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection, and on January 31, he shared the acquired NFT on Instagram. The artist bought the BAY #3001 token for US$ 1.3 million, approximately R$ 7 million in the US currency exchange rate at the time.

At that time, the price paid by Bieber was considered far above the market value, making the transaction one of the biggest in history involving technology. Prior to that, the singer had also shared, on December 15, 2021, his first acquisition of NFTs: the purchase of InBetweeners artwork. At the time, Bieber announced his partnership with the collection, popular for the images of bears.

One of the music stars most connected to non-fungible token technology is rapper Snoop Dogg. In April last year, he even launched his own collection of NFTs, in addition to collaborating with the creator of “Nyan Cat”, the flying cat meme that also became a token and was sold for R$3 million in 2021. On the other hand, the artist used a pseudonym and moved extraordinary amounts in NFT transactions without many knowing.

The rapper went by the name Cozomo de’ Medici and even had a Twitter account for the pseudonym, who was a huge token collector. With that, Snoop Dogg’s portfolio has more than US$ 17 million, about R$ 83.65 million at the current price, in digital arts. The artist’s top NFTs are from the CryptoPunks collection, and the most valuable token is estimated at $4.6 million.

If Snoop Dogg is used to trading on the token market, singer Madonna is a beginner in the world of NFTs. The Queen of Pop posted on her social media on March 24 that she “entered the metaverse” and acquired a token from the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection. The art purchased by the artist was BAY #4988, valued at 180 Ethereum, which, at the time of purchase, was equivalent to approximately R$2.8 million.

In her announcement, Madonna also commented that she received help from MoonPay, a cryptocurrency startup that helps companies transact digital assets. As soon as the pop diva acquired the token, she put the art as her profile picture and posted her “new monkey” on her Instagram.

Post Malone is another rapper active in the token market. The artist spent almost US$ 1 million (about R$ 5 million, in direct conversion) on two pieces of art in November last year. The star’s collection also includes two examples from the Bored Ape Yacht Club, specifically BAY #961 and BAY #9039.

Both NFTs totaled 160 Etherium, which, at the time of purchase, was equivalent to approximately US$734,400, or R$3.6 million at the current US dollar exchange rate. In addition to buying tokens, Post Malone used NFTs in the music video for “One Right Now” featuring The Weeknd, also in November 2021.
