France, fire in a uranium processing plant. Emergency plan activated

The French Agency which watches over the country’s nuclear power plants (Asn) claimed to have activated its emergency center following the outbreak of a fire in a plant containing uranium in southeastern France. The plant is managed by the French energy giant Edf. According to the information sent to the supervisory body, the fire would be under control. There is no news of any consequences for the personnel. “We are still working on securing the site,” said a plant manager, adding that he could not yet comment on any potential impact on nuclear safety. According to Edf’s website, the Romans-sur-Isere facility where the fire broke out produces fuel for nuclear reactors based on enriched uranium.

This is yet another problem involving French nuclear plants. More than half of the 54 French plants are down for maintenance. A situation that has already cost EDF 29 billion euros and forced France to import electricity from abroad for the first time. The French government has started the complete nationalization of the group (of which it already owned 84%) to meet the huge investment plan needed.
