A total of seventeen films, plus three in preparation, will make up the Nuovo Listino 01 Distribution 2022-23 presented by Paolo Del Brocco, CEO of Rai Cinema, at the Media Center of the Turin Film Festival (Auditorium della Cavallerizza). Great foreign authors such as Spielberg, Polanski, Scorsese and Mann and as many Italians as Salvatores, Garrone, Moretti and Bellocchio, to name just a few. Thus we saw the first images, to stay with the Italians only, of THE RETURN OF CASANOVA by Gabriele Salvatores with Toni Servillo in the dark role of the Venetian adventurer (really promising images); of IO CAPITANO by Matteo Garrone, a Homeric fairy tale that tells the story of the journey of two young people, Seydou and Moussa who leave Dakar to reach Europe; then there is THE CONVERSION by Marco Bellocchio, a film inspired by the true story of Edgardo Mortara, a Jewish child who was taken away from his family in 1858 to be raised as a Catholic under the custody of Pope Pius IX. Finally, after TRE PIANI, Rai Cinema presents IL SOL DELL’AVVENIRE by Nanni Moretti set between the 1950s and 1970s in the world of circus and cinema. Still on the Italian front, the comedy THROUGH FRIENDSHIP by and with Alessandro Siani; MIXED BY ERRY by Sydney Sibilia; MIA by Ivano De Matteo with Edoardo Leo in the role of a father who tries to defend his daughter Mia from a young manipulator; PHYSICAL EDUCATION by Stefano Cipani with the story of a group of parents, summoned by the principal who do not accept that their children are guilty of a bad act and THE CHIMERA by Alice Rohrwacher the story of a British archaeologist (Josh O’Connor) involved in the black market of valuable historical artifacts. Then there is the co-production between France, Germany and Italy which gave birth to THE SCARLET SAILS by Pietro Marcello, a fairy tale loosely based on the novel by Aleksandr Grin. In the Rai line-up then the extraordinary autobiographical tribute to cinema which is THE FABELMANS by Steven Spielberg; THE PALACE by Polanski, a black comedy produced by Luca Barbareschi; Chad Stahelski’s JOHN WICK 4; Guy Nattiv’s GOLDA biopic of the Israeli prime minister; THE SON by Florian Zeller, the last chapter of a trilogy that includes La Mère and Il padre with Anthony Hopkins, Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern and Vanessa Kirby; KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON by Scorsese crime movie based on the novel by David Graan with Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio and FERRARI by Michael Mann with Adam Driver in the role of the legendary car manufacturer. Finally, among the new productions, three films: COMANDANTE by Edoardo De Angelis, on the hero of the Italian Royal Navy Todaro; FINALLY DAWN by Saverio Costanzo and LUBO by Giorgio Rights. “From box office receipts there are encouraging indicators, there is a clear return of the public to theaters for Italian films such as, for example, THE STRANEZZA, THE HUMMINGBIRD, THE SHADOW OF CARAVAGGIO. Certainly not at the pre-pandemic level”.
Paolo Del Brocco then said, in presenting the Rai 2022-23 Price List. “Our product – he continued – takes two things into account: supporting the industrial reality and being aware that quality comes from quantity. If we hadn’t produced many new directors, surprises like Nicchiarelli and Carpignano wouldn’t have come”. Finally, as regards the so-called ‘windows’ (i.e. the time that must pass from the theatrical release to landing on a platform): “The important thing is that there is a clear time that applies to everyone, Italian and foreign films , and that the public will finally be aware of the time they have to wait to see it on TV”. And again on the box office Del Brocco said: “It should also be taken into account that recently there have been no directors such as Verdone, Ozpetek and Muccino who have engaged in works for platforms”.
