The Golden Ball award ceremony, the award for the world’s best footballer in 2021, was held on Monday evening at the Theater du Chatelet in Paris. He won – for the seventh time in his career – Messi, who collected 613 votes. The second Lewandowski received 580, and the third, Jorginho – 460.
The verdict aroused great emotions. Many experts argued that it was the Polish representative who deserved the main distinction.
Lewandowski did not come back empty-handed
This year’s “France Football” poll was voted by 180 journalists from around the world who chose the best five players from among 30 nominees. They gave the first 6 points, the second – 4, the third – 3, the fourth – 2 and the fifth – 1.
According to the published list of voters, Lewandowski did not find recognition in the eyes of 27 electors. Apart from the representative of Argentina, journalists from Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Belize, Bhutan, Bolivia, Brazil, Greece, Granada, Guatemala, Yemen, Jordan, Cameroon, Cayman Islands, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Morocco, Mozambique, Oman, Palestine, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Sudan, Suriname, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
On the other hand, journalists from 22 countries did not vote for Messi: Brazil, Bhutan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Finland, the Netherlands, Yemen, Cameroon, Comoros, Kyrgyzstan, Madagascar, Moldova, Mozambique, Portugal, El Salvador, Slovenia, Scotland, Switzerland, Togo , Turkey, Ukraine and Hungary. However, this did not prevent him from winning the Golden Ball at the expense of Lewandowski.

However, Lewandowski did not return from France empty-handed. At the beginning of the gala, he received the trophy for the best goalscorer of 2021. In this category, goals in club and national team competitions were taken into account.
France Football has awarded its trophy since 1956. In 2010-2015, the newspaper and the International Football Federation (FIFA) jointly awarded one player with the FIFA Golden Ball, but from 2016 the polls for the best players are again conducted separately.
