The American actress stressed how decisive the support of fans has been for her career.
“Through it all… none of it… would have been possible without the best fans in the world. You are all riders and you have made racing so fun and iconic!!” added Ellen Pompeo, concluding the message with the words “I love you madly”.

This is the post that accompanied the season finale of Grey’s Anatomy, which aired last week. That final episode was really final for her: it marked her official departure from the stage.

Even the creator of the series, Shonda Rhimes, shared a sentimental post about Ellen Pompeo on social media.

“What a wild ride these past 19 seasons have been. None of this would have been possible without the incomparable Ellen Pompeo, the one and only Meredith Grey,” Rhimes wrote on IG in the caption accompanying a selfie of hers with Pompeo.

And it is she, Shonda Rhimes, who has opened a breach in the hope of the fans, adding: “In true #greysanatomy fashion … this is not goodbye, it’s goodbye, see you later! Can’t wait to see what happens ‘is in store for Ellen, Meredith and Gray Sloan Memorial (Hospital).’

The reason for Pompeo’s farewell to Grey’s Anatomy

Grey’s Anatomy 17, Ellen Pompeo: “It could be the final season”

Pompeo retired from the series this season due to work commitments of various kinds. Projects outside the medical drama she was a part of include Hulu’s adaptation of the 2009 film Orphanwhich follows a terrifying adoption story in which a couple’s new daughter is revealed to be a grown woman masquerading as a child.

In Grey’s AnatomyMeredith decided to leave Seattle for Boston, where she accepted a position at the Catherine Fox Foundation researching Alzheimer’s disease. There have been far more dramatic (and tragic) outings in the series, so fans won’t have to grieve too much this time around. Meredith’s new work certainly leaves the door open for guest appearances, as Shonda Rhimes herself has given us a bit of a spoiler.

And Pompeo herself also confirmed it in the conclusion of her Instagram statement. “This is not the first time on a roller coaster… You know the show must go on and I will definitely be back to see you,” she wrote.

Anyway, Ellen Pompeo has been saying it for some time…

Ellen Pompeo and the possibility of leaving Grey’s Anatomy

Although Ellen Pompeo has been one of the cornerstones of Grey’s Anatomy Since its first season in 2005, her decision to scale back her role on the series this year hasn’t been entirely unexpected: the actress has long spoken to the media about her attempts to ABC to conclude the series.

“I’ve been trying to focus on convincing everyone that it should stop,” she told Insiders in December 2021. “I feel like I’m that super naïve one who keeps saying, ‘But what’s the story going to be, what story are we going to tell?’”.
