In an attack carried out on Sunday in the old city of Jerusalem by a Hamas member, a 25-year-old resident of Israel was killed and four people were injured. A Palestinian bomber was shot dead by the police, the Assosiated Press agency reported.
The attack occurred on a Sunday morning near the Western Wall when a 42-year-old Hamas fighter, who was also a teacher in high school, opened fire on passers-by with an automatic weapon.
The fatal victim of the attack is a young resident of Jerusalem who moved from South Africa to Israel in 2017; was a volunteer paratrooper in the Israeli Defense Forces and city guide.
Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett expressed his condolences to the victim’s family and praised the services for their quick response to the incident. The head of government recalled that the Sunday shooting is the second such act after last week’s terrorist attack in Jerusalem, which killed two border guards.
Hamas praised the attack as a “heroic operation” and said the perpetrator was a member of it. At the same time, the group did not take responsibility for the shooting, AP notes.
The resistance of our people, implemented by all means and tools, is and will be justified in the face of the activities of the Zionist occupant, as long as the goals we set are not achieved, and the occupation of our holy places and lands that are dear to us will continue said a spokesman for the organization Abd al-Latif al-Kanu.
The South African Board of Jewish Deputies said in a statement that it was “devastated” by the news of the death of a former member of Johannesburg’s Jewish community.
In 2007, the Hamas organization took control of the Gaza Strip from Fatah, another Palestinian political and military group.
